CHAPTER 5

WAVES
Prepared by: Teacher NurlailieMJ
5.3 REFLECTION OF WAVES
5.3.1 Describe reflection of waves from the following aspects:
a) Angle of incidence (i)
b) Angle of reflection (r)
c) Wavelength, λ
d) Frequency, f
e) Speed, v
f) Direction of propagation

5.3.2 Draw a diagram to show the reflection of plane water waves by through
a plane reflector

5.3.3 Justify the application of reflection of waves in daily life.

5.4.4 Solve problems involving reflection of waves

Recall your
knowledge....

What is Reflection ?
What are the conditions for
Reflection to occur ?
Ripple Tank
Dark & bright patterns form on the
screen
Let’s Do Activity!!!
1. By using the stroboscope, you are required to :
◦ Observe the wave pattern before & after the wave
striking the reflector at different angle of incidence.
◦ Observe the shadows pattern that form on the screen.

2. From the observation,

a) compare angle of incidence, i and angle of
reflection, r
b) compare incident wavelength and reflected
wavelength
c) compare the frequency of incident wave and
frequency of reflected wave
d) based on your answers in (b) and (c) compare the
speed of incident wave with reflected wave
Characteristic of Reflection of
Waves

The direction of the propagation of the

waves change after undergoing reflection
Angle of reflection, r = Angle of incidence,
i
Wavelength of reflected wave =
Wavelength of the incident wave

Frequency of reflected wave = Frequency of

the incident wave

Speed of reflected wave = Speed of the

incident wave
Drawing Diagram of Reflection of Waves
Figure shows incident waves travel to a plane reflector.

Plane reflector 1) Draw an arrowed line

perpendicular to incident
wavefronts to represent the
direction of propagation of
incident waves.
i r 2) Draw the normal line which is
perpendicular to the reflector.
3) Draw an arrow with the condition
angle of incidence, i = angle of
relection, r to represent the
direction of propation of
4 reflected wave
1 3 4) Draw lines perpendicular to the
reflected wave direction to
represent the reflected
wavefronts. The wavelength

Exercises
1. If you were sound engineer, what is the
modification that you have to do to
improve a recording studio. In your
explanations, includes steps to overcome
sound reflection problems.

2. You are engaged by an interior design

company to help to design a café in
town, you are required to make the café
look more specious. Explain how to
make the hall look bigger by fixing
mirror on the wall.
