WHAT IS THE PEACE PROCESS IN COLOMBIA

 The peace process in Colombia are dialogues that have been carried out
between Colombian insurgent forces (FARC, ELN) and the Colombian
government, with the final purpose to get peace in our country.
 The dialogues consist of a meeting between the president of the republic and
representatives of insurgent forces. The meeting is usually in another country or
remote area of Colombia.
 Until now have been four attempts to reach a peace agreement between the
government and insurgent forces.
PAST OF THE PEACE PROCESS
 Three attempts have made before the government of Santos president.
 The first attempt was in 1984. The dialogues began in March between Belisario
president and the FARC insurgent force. These dialogues broke with the murder
of Iván Marino Óspina in august of 1985.
 The second attempt was in 1991. The dialogues began in June, in Caracas
(Venezuela) and after in Tlaxcala (Mexico). The President César Gaviria started
dialogues in Caracas (Venezuela) and after continued in Tlaxcala (Mexico). The
dialogues broke in March of 1992 with the murder of Argelino Duran
 The third attempt was 1999. The President Andres Pastrana put a negotiating
table in San Vicente del Cagúan. The dialogues were broken after the murder of
“Eduardo Gechem” congressman, in 2002.
PRESENT OF THE PEACE PROCESS
 Actually, the fourth attempt is active. This attempt was started by Juan Manuel
Santos President, in September 4 of 2012. The dialogues are taking place in La
Habana, Cuba.
 According to the president, On March 30, after more than three years of exploratory
conversations, Colombia’s government and second-largest insurgent group, the
National Liberation Army (ELN), reached agreement on an agenda for formal
negotiations and reach peace agreement. However this did not happen.
 The representatives of the armed forces are holidaying in Habana. They go to
concerts, baseball games…
CONCLUSIONS

 The peace process in Colombia is more complex than it seems. Always a strange
event occurs and it falls.
 The fourth attempt was been the nearest in the way of get peace.
 If this attempt fails, the government will have to find another methodology to get
peace in our country.
 The Colombian government should provide more guarantees of security for the
Colombian insurgent forces.
 It has not made significant progress.
