WORKING CONDITION
• Public health educators generally work in comfortable offices. When they are conducting forums
or giving presentations, they may have to work some evenings and weekends. Public health educ

• Educators must have good communication skills and be comfortable working with people. They m
ust also be able to adapt ideas to suit various situations.

TRAINING, QUALIFICATIONS AND ADVANCEMENT
• Community health workers typically complete a brief period of on-the-job training. This tra
ining often covers core competencies such as communication or outreach skills as well as i

• It is essential that health educators be comfortable working with individuals and groups. T
hey must be excellent verbal and written communicators, as they are often speaking in pu
blic or teaching classes. A sensitivity to cultural differences is a necessity, as they are often
working with diverse populations.
• To advance past an entry-level position, a graduate degree is usually required. In higher po
sitions, health educators spend most of their time planning and evaluating programs and l
ess time on implementing them. Health educators with a doctoral degree in health educati
on may pursue a research position or become professors of health education.
