• Firstly, Richard’s determination helps him to save innocent wildlife.
• In Chapter 1, Richard goes hunting with his father and brother, Gus. His
father expects Richard to get his first hunt with success.
• Richard hesitantly raises his rifle and aims towards the buck. Richard
believes in doing the right thing that is not to shoot the buck, and
finally misses the shot.
• His determination to save the buck’s life helps him to achieve his
dream.
• We must always try to do the right thing even though our action may
not be liked by others.
Second Point
• Secondly, we can see Richard’s success in doing the right thing that is
to support Hannah when she is down.
• One day, the tavern which belongs to the Schermer’s is vandalised
and Mrs Hansen asks her pupils to sign the sympathy card which will
be sent to Hannah.
• The card is passed around in class but in the end, nobody signs it
except Richard. Richard’s determination is clearly seen here as he
does not care what his classmates would say or do to him.
• All he cares is to do the right thing that is to sign the card and comfort
Hannah.
Point Three
• Finally, Richard’s determination has helped him to achieve his dream of
doing the right thing when he rejects his role as a Doughboy.
• This is because Hannah rejects her roles as she does not want to create
any more troubles.
• Richard is determined to defend Hannah up to the extent he is willing
to reject his role as a Doughboy.
• Richard wants to do the right thing that is not to practice prejudice and
support his friend Hannah no matter what happens.
• Obviously his determination helps him to achieve what he wants or
dreams of.

community unlike the claims made by the bullies from Richard’s
classmates that poems are for ‘Sissies’.

• Second, I like the ending because it patches the void in the relationship
between a son and his father.
• Pa was initially cold and distant towards Richard although they always work
together at the farm. However, this situation changed. Their relationship
was strengthened after Mr Kilmer’s death in the war.
• The change happened after Richard wrote a poem to commemorate Kilmer’s
death.
• In that poem, Richard used the same phrase that went through Pa’s mind
during Uncle Roland’s funeral. The phrase was ‘A world is gone. A world is
dead and gone’. The poem was published in ‘The Turtle Lake Weekly’ and Pa
was very impressed of Richard.

• Third, the ending in this novel has an important moral value which is
perseverance and determination
• Richard was ridiculed by some of his classmates for his poetry writing. Pa also
said that poetry has put crazy ideas in his mind.
• Despite all these objections, Richard continued to write poems
• He made contacts with Mr Kilmer who motivated him to write poetry.
• He also befriended the Schermers who supported him.
• Mr Schermer even persuaded him to send his poem about Mr Kilmer to be
published in ‘The Turtle Lake Weekly’. Since then, he is a regular poetry writer.
From this ending, it is clear that perseverance is important in achieving success.

• I enjoyed reading the novel.

ending. It ends well and this leaves a sweet memory to all the
readers.
