1. conditional sentence type 1
conditional sentence type 1 is used to
express a situation or event that usually
happens or will happen if the situation/
condition in the if clause is complete. In other
words, what was supposed to have a chance
to happen or be true.
Ex: If I have the time, I will go.
He will not go to the picnic if it rains.
I will give him a piece of my mind if I see
him.
The use of the conditional sentence type 1
 To talk about possible situations in the present or future (predictions)
Ex: If you leave earlier you will not be late
 To express about habitual.
Note: in this sentence, don’t use auxiliary modals.
Ex: If he has money, he always treats us.
 To talk about facts or process
Ex: when ice is heated it melts
If you heat water to 100 degress it will boil.
 Give command
Ex: If you have time, please meet me in my office.
 To talk about use other modals such as can, my, etc.
Ex: If I bring the book, you van borrow it.
 The use of modal ”will” suggest a certainty however, the use other
modals exception will express the possibility
Ex: If he works hard, he will pass (certainty).
If he works hard, he can pass (possibility).
2. Conditional sentence type 2
this type of sentence modality expressing a situation or condition that is contrary to
the fact at the present.
 we use simple past tense in if clause we use past future tense in main clause.
Ex: If I had a pair of wings I would fly high
 We can also use other modal such as, could,, might and should.
Ex: If I brought the book, you could borrow it.
you should make the report if you faced the problem.
 The use of modal “would” in this type indicate a certainly in contrast, use of modal
could or might declare a possibility .
Ex: If you tried, you would pass (certainty).
If you tried harder, you might pass (possibility).
 If In the if clause there is not a verb (nominal sentence), we use to be “were” for all
subjects and the meaning of the sentence doesn’t change.
Ex: If I were a bird, I would fly in the sky
I would forgive him if I were you.
 We use “were” for all of the subject
Ex: If she were very rich she would buy that big house
 We put “were” in the first sentence.
Ex: Were I not busy, I would accompany you
3. Conditional sentence type 3
used when we talk about something that is not taking place
in the past because the condition is not complete.
 Use as if I as though in unreal conditionals
conjunction as if or as though can also be used to express
the situation as opposed to reality.
Ex: Ali talked about the contest as if he had won the grand
prize.
He spoke as though he had not stolen the money.
 Difference in use wish/ hope in conditional sentences verb
wish and hope equally mean hope, but its use in the
sentence is very different.
Ex: We hope that they can come.
I wish that they had come yesterday.
