ThenameofRajpuraappearsinthehistoryasEmperorSherShahSuri"TheLionKing",andfounderoftheSuri
Dynastybuilta"Sarai"(Inn)inRajpurafortravellersandforhisarmywheneverhepassedthroughRajpura.This
SaraiwasbuiltduringtheSuriDynasty,between1540and1545.Themorethan450yearsoldSaraiisalmostin
shamblesnowbutstillstandsbold.ThisSaraitodayhousestheofficesofSDM,TehsildarandDSPofpolice.The
SaraineedsurgentattentionofASI(ArchaeologicalSurveyofIndia)sothatthishistoricalmonumentofRajpura
canbepreservedasamarkinthehistory.
Rajpuraasatehsilincludes295villagesunderitsmunicipallimitsandisbiggesttehsilinPunjab.Rajpurahasnorth
India'sonlyorphanagecenter"SOS".
Rajpuracanbedividedintothreeparts.OneisRajpuraTownship,thesecondisOldRajpuraandthirdisFocal
Point.TheTownshipwasdevelopedpostindependencetorehabilitatethepeoplewhomigratedfromPakistani
provinceofBhawalpur.MajorityofthepeopleresidinginRajpuraTownshipareBhawalpuris,whomadetheir
markinRajpuratownandrunmostofthebusinessesinthetownship,includingthatofcommissionagentandrice
shellersinnewgrainmarket.

manufacturers,biscuitmachinesindustryandsteelworks.L&Thasconstructed1400MW(2x700MW)Rajpura
ThermalPowerPlantnearVillageNalasunderpowerpurchaseagreement.Thefirstunit,accordingtothepower
purchaseagreementsignedinJanuary2010,willbecommissionedbyJanuary2014followedbythesecondinMay
thatyear.Alsothereareplanstofurtheradd700mWpowercapacitytotheRajpuraPowerPlantinPunjabmaking
it2100mWproject.ThisprojectmarkstheL&T'sentryintothepowergenerationsegmentasadeveloper.
In2005,adiamondjewellerymanufacturingunitwasstartedandisengagedinthemanufacturingandsupplyof
diamondstudedgoldjewelleryandalsokundan,polkyandMina,etc.underthenameandstylePanchamJewellers
PvtLtdtheonlyofitskindunitinthisarea.
Mainlythesmallscaleindustriesarelocatedinthefocalpoint.Allindustrialunitsareboundedinachainof
associationnamed"RajpuraSmallScaleIndustriesAssociation".
ThegrainmarketofRajpuraisthesecondlargestgrainmarketofAsiafollowinggrainmarketofKhanna,it
acquiresnearabout150acresofareaandcomprisesmorethan290shops.

RajpuraissituatedatthejunctionofNationalHighwayNo.1whichrunsfromNewDelhitoAttariinPunjaband
