DEFINITION OF PROFESSION

• Architecture is the art and science of


designing and constructing buildings. A wider
definition would include within its scope the
design of the total built environment, from
the macro-level of town planning,
urban design, and landscape to the micro-
level of furniture and product design.
Architecture, equally importantly, also refers
to the product of such a design.
PRINCIPLE OF PROFESSIONALISM
Members of the architectural profession are dedicated to
standards of professionalism, integrity and competence.
Expertise: Architects possess a systematic body of knowledge,
skills, and theory developed through education, graduate and
post-graduate training and experience.
Autonomy: Architects provide objective expert advice to the
client and/or users.
Commitment: Architects bring a high level of selfless dedication
to the work done on behalf of their clients and society
Accountability: Architects are aware of their responsibility for the
independent and, if necessary, critical advice provided to their
client and for the effects of their work on society and the
environment.
PRACTICE OF ARCHITECTURE

A good building has 3 conditions:


• Convenience
• Firmness
• Beauty
The characteristics that distinguish a work of architecture from other man-
made structures are

– The suitability of the work to use by human beings in


general and the adaptability of it to particular human
activities,
– The stability and permanence of the work's construction,
and
– The communication of experience and ideas through its
form.
– All these conditions must be met in architecture.
ARCHITECT
• The designation ‘architect’ is generally reserved by law or
custom to a person who is professionally and academically
qualified and generally registered / licensed / certified to practise
architecture.
• He / she are responsible for advocating the fair and sustainable
development, welfare and the cultural expression of society’
habitat in terms of space, forms and historical context.
• Architects are part of the public and the private sector and the
construction sector peopled by those commissioning,
conserving, designing, building, furnishing, financing, regulation
and operating our built environment to meet the needs of the
society.
• Everything influencing the way in which the built environment is
made, used, furnished, landscaped and maintained belongs to
the domain of the architect.
