plants and Animals Cell

Lesson 3: Cell Technologies in the field of Medicine,
Agriculture, and Industry
Objectives:
1. Give examples of Cell technologies in the field of medicine,
agriculture and industry.
2. Describe the use Cell technologies in the field of medicine,
agriculture and industry.
3. Appreciate the advancements made since the discovery of cell.
What are the advancements in Cell since
it was discovered?
Stem cell technology- is a rapidly developing field that combines the
efforts of cell biologists, geneticists, and clinicians and offers hope of
effective treatment for a variety of malignant and non-malignant diseases.
What is a stem cell?
It is defined as totipotent progenitor cells capable of self-renewal
and multilineage differentiation.

A stem cell is a cell with the unique ability to develop into

specialized cell types in the body. In the future they may be used
to replace cells and tissues that have been damaged or lost due to
disease.
Two unique properties of a
Stem Cell

1. They can divide over and

over again to produce new
cells.

2. As they divide, they can

change into the other types
of cell that make up the body.
Different types of stem cell
Different types of stem cell
1.Embryonic stem cells-
supply new cells for
an embryo as it grows and
develops into a baby.
These stem cells are said to
be pluripotent, which
means they can change into
any cell in the body.
2. Adult stem cells-
supply new cells as an organism grows
and to replace cells that get damaged.
They are said to be multipotent, which
means they can only change into some
cells in the body, not any cell.
example:
Blood (or 'haematopoietic') stem cells
can only replace the various types of
cells in the blood.
Skin (or 'epithelial') stem cells provide
the different types of cells that make up
our skin and hair.
3. Induced pluripotent stem
cells
- or ‘iPS cells’, are stem cells that
scientists make in the laboratory.
‘Induced’ means that they are made
in the lab by taking normal adult
cells, like skin or blood cells, and
reprogramming them to become
stem cells.
Just like embryonic stem cells, they
are pluripotent so they can develop
into any cell type.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Embryonic Stem Cells
How stem cell technology is done?
Cellular Agriculture is an emerging technology for
producing food products from cultures of the cells from
plants, animals, fungi and microbes.
- is just a method of making foods that conventionally come from
animals, but without those animals.
THE CELL
AGRICULTURE
APPROACH OR METHOD
1. cell cultivation
(cellular)- refers to
growing meat directly
from cells.
THE CELL AGRICULTURE
APPROACH OR METHOD

2. precision
fermentation (acellular)-
refers to the use of
microorganisms rather than
cell cultures to produce
products such as milk and
egg-white proteins.
