Generative Grammar
CARNIE (2013), CHAPTER 1
2
Language and language
A theory of linguistics
Grammar is viewed as a subconscious faculty
A set of procedures or rules generates sentences
THEGOALS OF SYNTACTIC THEORY IS TP MODEL THESE
PROCEDURES, TO MODEL LANGUAGE (CAPITAL L)
What do we subconsciously know about the sentence structure of
our language?
4
Generative Grammar
Standard Theory,
Extended Standard Theory,
Government and Binding Theory (GB),
Principles and Parameters approach (P&P),
Minimalist Program (MP)or Minimalism
Often given the blanket term Generative Grammar.
6
If
syntactic rules are subconscious, how do we find out
what they are?
We follow the Scientific Method
10
The Scientific Method?
1. Gather observations
2. Make generalizations
3. Form a hypothesis
These hypotheses are our rules
A (large) group of these rules = Grammar
11
The Scientific Method for Syntax: Anaphors
Anaphor = noun that end with –self (e.g. himself, herself, themselves)
Antecedent = the noun that an anaphor refers to
Example:
(1) Bill kissed himself
Antecedent anaphor
(2) *Bill kissed herself
12
The Scientific Method
Hypothesis 1:
An anaphor must (i) have an antecedent and (ii) agree in
gender with its antecedent.
But:
(3) *Gary and Kevin ran himself into exhaustion.
13
The Scientific Method
Hypothesis 2:
An anaphor must (i) have an antecedent and (ii) agree in
gender (masculine, feminine, and neuter) and number
with its antecedent.
But:
*He hit myself with a hammer.
14
The Scientific Method
Hypothesis 3:
An anaphor must agree in person, gender and number
with its antecedent.
We now have a hypothesis that seems to account for data
concerning anaphors in English.
