GPS4. Explain why the following sentences are ungrammatical. For each sentence, say
what the binding domain of the NP causing the problem is, whether it is c-commanded by
its binder (antecedent), and name the binding condition that is violated.

a.  *Michael i loves him i .

 b) *He i loves Michael i.

 c) *Michaeli’s fatherj loves himself i.

 d) *Michaeli ’s fatherj loves himj .

 e) *Susani thinks that John should marry herselfi.

 f) *John thinks that Susani should kiss heri.

1. Michaeli loves himi

Violation of Principle B. Michael, who C-commands it and is coindexed with it, binds the
pronoun him in its binding domain.

2. Hei loves Michaeli

Violation of Principle C. He is bound by the R-expression Michael, which he also C-

commands and coindexes.

3. Michael'sifather j loves himselfi

Principle A violation. The anaphor himself is unbound. Michael does not C-

command himself, despite the fact that he is coindexed with himself.

4. Michael'sifather j loves himj

Violation of Principle B. Michael's father C-commands and is coindexed with the

pronoun him, which is bound in its binding domain.

5. Susani thinks that John should marry herselfi

Principle A violation. Susan binds the anaphor, but it is not bound within its
binding domain, that is, within the same clause.

6. John thinks that Susan i should kiss heri

Violation of Principle B. Susan, which C-commands it and is coindexed with it,

binds the pronoun her in its binding domain.
