I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of 60 minute period, the pupils are expected to:

1. Review
What was our lesson yesterday? We learned how to compose
sentences using subject-verb
agreement.
What is subject verb agreement? A singular subject uses a
singular verb or s-form of the
verb.
Plural subject uses a plural verb
or base form of the verb.
2. Unlocking of Difficulties
As we go on with our lesson you will
meet some new words. Let’s try to
find out what these words are.
Based on the given definition arrange the
Jumbled letter to spell the word correctly.

3. Motivation

tell something about them.

The girl running or maybe she is
running.

the girl is getting her clothes in the


closet but she can’t decide what to
wear.

By now, you have already mastered


the use of simple sentences. This time
you will learn another kind of sentence
according to structure, the compound
sentences.

4. Discussion
Let us read the sentences and pay
attention to the structure of the sentence.

1. Rudolf did not want to be called unworthy


of his good position, so he praised the
cloth he did not see.
2. They stopped dancing, and the princes
rowed them back to the other shore.
3. He looks handsome, but he is a
little old for me.
4. You should keep quiet or you have to
stay home.
5. Many more daring and wise men came to
take up the challenge, yet they could not
discover the princesses’ secret.
6. The soldier put on his cloak so he would
be invisible.
7. The youngest princess kept quiet for she
did not want to stay home.

The sentences above are compound sentences.


They are composed of two separate subjects
and predicates or independent clauses.

Let us read again the number 1.

1. Rudolf did not want to be called unworthy


of his good position, so he praised the
cloth he did not see.
Rudolf did not want to be called unworthy
of his good position is the first independent
clause. Rudolf is the subject and did not want
to be called unworthy of his good position
is the predicate.
While the so is what we called the connector
or the coordinating conjuctions.

Conjuctions are used to join words or group of words.


They are also used to join independent clause to form
a compound sentence.
1. And- connect related ideas.
(the teacher will site an example)
2. But-connects contrasting ideas.
(the teacher will site an example)
3. Or- means a choice between ideas.
(the teacher will site an example)
Aside from this three there are also
another conjunctions. These are
for,yet,nor and so.
Always remember FANBOYS when we are pertaining
to conjuctions.F-or, A-nd, N-or, B-ut, O-r, Y-et and S-o.

And lastly he praised the cloth he did not see. Is the


second independent clause. He is the subject and
praised the cloth he did not see is the predicate.

4. Generalization
What is compound sentence? Compound sentence are
composed of two separate
subjects and predicates or
independent clauses.
What is coordinating conjuctions? Coordinating conjuctions are
used to join independent clause
to form a compound sentence.
5. Application
The class will be divided into 4 groups. Each group
Will compose 5 sompound sentences. After 10 minutes
A representative from each group will explain where is
the two independent clause and what coordinating
conjuctions did they used.

IV. EVALUATION
Underline the independent clause and
Encircle the coordinating conjuctions.

1. She did not cheat on the test, for it was not the right
thing to do.
2. I think I will buy the red car, or I will lease the blue one.
3. I really want to go to work, but I am too sick to drive.
4. I am counting my calories, yet I really want dessert.
5. He ran out of money, so he had to stop playing poker.
6. They got there early, and they got really good seats.
7. There was no ice cream in the freezer, nor did they
have money to go to the store.
8. Everyone was busy, so I went to the movie alone.
9. I would have gotten the promotion, but my attendance
wasn’t good enough.
10. Should we start class now, or should we wait for
everyone to get here?
