Introduction of Lesson
Ms. Chandra: Hello again class, I hope you had a lovely break time. Today for
English Arts Language we’ll be exploring opinion writing. Can you tell me what text
types we have explored in class previously?

*Some students raises their hands up*

Ms. Chandra: Yes Ava?

2

Ava: We did information text.

Ms. Chandra: That’s right we did informational texts, with facts. What other text
type did we do? Yes Michael?

Michael: We did stories text

Ms. Chandra: That’s right we did stories, they’re called narratives. When we tell
stories and had characters. Now, can anyone tell me what opinion writing could be?
Yes Joe?
Joe: Umm.. it’s when, you write, about your opinion?

Ms. Chandra: Yes that’s right Joe! What is an opinion though? Hmmm… Liam?

Liam: Um.. It’s like a thought, but your own thought.

Ms. Chandra: That’s right Liam! An opinion is someone’s thought or a view. For
example, if I say that my favorite food is pepperoni pizza so I think pepperoni pizza
is the best type of pizza, is that an opinion?

Students: Yessssss 3

Ms. Chandra: It is, because others might not agree with me. Ava might think cheese
pizza is better than pepperoni pizza. Doesn’t mean that I am wrong, or that Ava is
wrong. Because what I said is my own opinion. Should we make fun of other people
when they have a different opinion than us?

Students: Nooooo

Ms. Chandra: Let’s do another one. Alfie, what is your favorite game?
Alfie: Hmm minecraft.

Ms. Chandra: Oh minecraft? Ok my favorite game is among us, and I think among
us is the best. Do you agree class?

Students: Nooo

Other students: Yessss

Ms. Chandra: And that’s okay to disagree with an opinion class, because everyone
has their own thoughts right? I might think among us is the best, but Alfie thinks 4

minecraft is the best. Why do you think Minecraft is the best Alfie?

Alfie: Hmm.. I like it because, you can make anything in Minecraft, and you can go
anywhere!
Ms. Chandra: That’s great! You gave me two great reasons why Minecraft is
the best! Those reasons supported your statement that Minecraft is the best
game. Now everyone let’s face the SmartBoard and I will open a NearPod
activity. We will read a short passage together, and then we determine the text
types we have learned. Ready? Here’s the first passage. Caitlin, would you
read it aloud please?

Caitlin: Okay, um. Passage 1. The wind was so strong, that Amanda was able
to hear the woods of her house shaking. She has to focus on finishing her 5

book for class tomorrow, but the loud noises of the wind made it hard for her
to… Co.. Co..Con..Concert..

Ms. Chandra: Concentrate, for her to focus

Caitlin: to concentrate. Just then, her little brother Alex came bursting in the
door. He was crying. “I’m scared..” Alex said softly. Caitlin gestured to Alex
to come over and give her a hug, which he did without hesitation.
Ms. Chandra: Thank you Caitlin well done! Now let’s see the question. What
text type was the first page? Was it A) Opinion writing, B) Informative text, C)
Recount, or D) Narrative. Yes Daniel?

Daniel: D, it’s a narrative.

Ms. Chandra: Okay give me a thumbs up if you agree with Daniel or a thumbs
down if you disagree with him.

*Most students give a thumbs up, except for two*

6
Ms. Chandra: Leanna, what do you think the first passage is?

Leanna: Um I think it’s a recount.

Ms. Chandra: Oh that’s a great guess! It does kind of sound like a recount,
because it could’ve easily happen in real life. Daniel was right, the first passage is
a narrative, even though it sounds like a recount. But if you look closer, the
passage was written in third person, and recounts are usually written in first
person. Can anyone tell me what writing in first person means? Yes Rodriguez?
Rodriguez: It means you write in your point of view, like with “I” or “me”.

Ms. Chandra: That’s right! Well done Rodriguez. Okay let’s move on to the
second passage. Alfie, would you read the second passage?

Alfie: Um okay. ‘Harry Potter and the Chambers of Secrets’ was packed with
action, fantasy and creativity. The movie was just as refreshing as the first one,
yet added elements of thrill and mystery. Truly, a movie that can be enjoyed for a
family movie night.
7
Ms. Chandra: Thank you Alfie. Now what text type do we think this one is
class? Is it A) Opinion writing, B) Informative text, C) Recount or D) Narrative?
What do you think Ava?

Ava: I think it’s informative text.

Ms. Chandra: Okay class thumbs up if you agree with Ava and thumbs down if
you disagree with her.

*The students seem to be split in half, with half showing a thumbs up and half
showing a thumbs down*
Ms. Chandra: Soyeon, you disagreed with Ava. What do you think it is?

Soyeon: I think it’s opinion writing.

Ms. Chandra: Well done Soyeon, it is an opinion writing. Although it does seem
like an informative text with facts, the author wrote that they enjoyed the movie, and
that is an opinion because it is subjective and therefore not a fact. Now class let me
show you the features of an opinion writing or text. An opinion writing is about your
own view, or the author’s perception. Therefore, the initial statement of the opinion,
has to be subjective. If I write “I think the world is round”, is that an opinion? 8

Students: Noooo

Ms. Chandra: That’s right it’s not, because the world is in fact round. If I were to
say, “The world needs more games like Minecraft”, is that an opinion?

Students: Yessss

Ms. Chandra: That’s right because it’s not a fact that the world needs more games
like Minecraft, but I certainly think so. Therefore it’s my opinion.
Alfie: Ms. Chandra *raises his hand up*

Ms. Chandra: Yes Alfie?

Alfie: What if you say, something like “Minecraft is better than Roblox” because
everyone knows it’s true. Isn’t that a fact?

Ms. Chandra: Well, that is still in opinion Alfie. Even if you and your friends and
everyone you know prefer Minecraft than Roblox, there might be someone out there
that likes Roblox more. There might be someone that doesn’t like Minecraft at all! 9
And that’s okay, because it’s their opinion.

Alfie: Oh.. okay.

Ms. Chandra: Now the statement for an opinion writing is one of the most
important things, because it would be the base of your whole writing. You statement
is basically your main topic that will connect your whole paragraph together.
Remember for an opinion statement, the statement cannot be a fact and it has to be
objective.
Ms. Chandra: I am opening a
Google Docs, because later I will
want you all to create an outline
for an opinion writing. I will
provide you with a graphic
organizer like this, to help you
with your outline okay? This is the
general format of an opinion 10
writing.

You’ll be able to fill in this

worksheet on your Google Docs,
the link is already in the English
Google Classroom. This
worksheet will be use as a guide,
so you don’t have to use it if you
don’t want to okay?
Ms. Chandra: For an opinion essay, you have to introduce your opinion statement
in the first paragraph or the introduction. What happens if you don’t introduce it in
the beginning of the essay, Rodriguez?

Rodriguez: Um, then the reader will get confused.

Ms. Chandra: That’s right, it’ll be very confusing for the reader if they don’t know
the topic of the essay. So your opinion statement is very important and has to be put
in the introduction paragraph. For the main body, each paragraph would be a reason
11
that supports your statement. You reasons can be subjective or objective, but
objective reasons is much stronger and compelling.

Soyeon: Miss? What is compelling?

Ms. Chandra: Compelling mean it is very interesting, or a very powerful reason. I

will give you an example. One reason I thing Among Us is the best game ever, is
because the game has seasonal changes. Now that’s a fact of the game, and a reason
I’m giving to support my statement.
Ms. Chandra: For my second reason or paragraph, I can write something like
“another reason I think Among Us is the best game is because you can play with
your friends from around the world. “ Now this reason is objective, because I am
providing the fact that you can play with your friends online. To continue the
paragraph, I can write something more subjective to share my personal experience.
For example, “I often don’t get to see my friends who are far away, so playing
Among Us together is really fun.” Do you think that’s a strong reason?

Students: Yeaaaah 12

Ms. Chandra: Haha I think so too. Now for my third reason, hmm what if I write,
“another reason Among Us is the best game ever is because I like it.” Is that a strong
reason?

Students: Umm, no?

Ms. Chandra: Yeah not really strong is it? I didn’t offer a reason, and I gave another
subjective view, because I think it’s fun. So let’s delete that and think of another
reason *deletes the third reason*, anyone have any ideas?
Joe: *Raises hand* You can say, Among Us is the best game ever because so many
people play it.

Ms. Chandra: Oh that’s an interesting reason! Let’s go with that reason, but I think
we can make it even more compelling and stronger. Any ideas? Ava?

Ava: Maybe we can google how many people play Among Us?

Ms. Chandra: Good idea! Okay let’s google it together *types in google number of
players Among Us*, wow as of September 2020, there are 60 million active users 13
playing Among Us. That’s a lot of people! So for my third reason I’m going to type,
“A reason Among Us is the best game ever is that more than 60 million people play
it all around the world”. Do we think that’s a good reason?

Students: Yeaaah!

Alfie: That’s a lot of people!

Ms. Chandra: It is a lot of people! And we wouldn’t have known if we didn’t do our
own research with Google. So if you want to find a reason, feel free to Google it
yourself or do your own research.
Ms. Chandra: Now your last paragraph is your conclusion. We have written
conclusions before right?

Students: *nod*

Ms. Chandra: What’s a conclusion, Soyeon?

Soyeon: It’s the last paragraph that like, wraps all the things together.

Ms. Chandra: Yes it’s where you compile all your statements and evidence together.
So for my opinion writing, I’m going to start my conclusion like this *starts typing 14

on Google Docs* “In conclusion, I believe that Among Us is the best game ever
because of the game’s seasonal changes, the fact that I can play online with my
friends, and it has more than 60 million people playing the game.”
Ms. Chandra: Now let’s take a look of the Do’s and the Don’ts of an opinion
writing. From our discussion, can anyone tell me something we should do? Yes
Maddie?

Maddie: State your opinion in the very beginning.

Ms. Chandra: Yes! *writes on SmartBoard* That’s the most important thing to do!
Introduce your opinion statement very early, and it has to be in the introduction
paragraph which is the first paragraph. Another thing we should do? Amber?

Amber: Um, write at least 3 reasons?

15

Ms. Chandra: Yes! We want to have 3 reasons, but if you run out of time try to have
at least 2 good reasons to support your opinion. What kind of reasons should we use
Amber?n

Amber: Um.. Something that’s not, another opinion?

Ms. Chandra: That’s right! A compelling reason is supported by facts. Try using an
objective reason to support your statement, and it will make your reasons stronger.
Now what should we not do?
Alfie: Don’t, use, subjective reasons.

Ms. Chandra: Well done Alfie! Try to use objective reasons because it’s more
compelling, but subjective reasons can be okay too. Anything else?

Rodriguez: Don’t be mean about other people’s opinions.

Ms. Chandra: Thank you Rodriguez! We haven’t talked about that before that is a
great point! Don’t forget we have to respect each other’s opinions okay? Even if I
think Among Us is the best game, and Alfie thinks Minecraft is the best game, does
Alfie make fun of my opinion?
16
Students: Noooooo

Ms. Chandra: And I don’t want to see mean reasons either, if I wrote “Among Us is
the best game ever because it is better than Minecraft.” Is that a good reason?

Students: NOOOOO

Ms. Chandra: No of course not, not only that is not a good reason because it
doesn’t support my statement, it’s mean because that means I’m not respecting
Alfie’s opinion. Okay?
Activity Ms. Chandra: Now we’ll be moving on to our activity portion of the lesson. What I
would like you all to do is, with your own devices, I want you to create an outline for
your opinion essay. There is a graphic organizer on Google Classroom that you can
use, but you don’t have to. You should write your online in Google Docs okay? An the
outline will help you write your essay later one. You can write the outline in dot
points or in sentences like I did previously. Any questions? Yes Alfie?

Alfie: Do we make our own opinion statement? Like, it can be on anything?

17
Ms. Chandra: Yep that’s the fun part! It can be about anything you want, as long as it
is respectful and appropriate. At the end of the class, I want you to at least have an
opinion statement and 2 reasons in your outline. Then just before we wrap up the
class, I’d like everyone to put their opinion statement in the Google Sheets available
on Google Classroom okay? Any questions?

Ava: Where do we find the graphic organizer?

Ms. Chandra: Good question Ava. If you go to your
Google Classrooms and go to Ms. Chandra’s
classwork, the link should be there on today’s date.
Now when you click on the link, what you have to do
is click on the ‘file’ tab on the top left side of the 18

screen, and go down to click on ‘Make a copy.’ This

will automatically make a copy to your Google
Account, is that clear?

Activity
Ms. Chandra: Remember the most important
part of an opinion writing, is the opinion
itself. So think of a statement that will 20
become the topic of your essay. Remember
the statements have to appropriate, and
respectful. If you have any questions, I’ll be
here to answer them ok?
Students: Okay Ms. Chandra!
Special
Needs
For students with special
needs in the classroom, they
are allowed to use Text-to-
Speech program (using
headphones to not distract 21

other students) and/or voice

typing.

Using Google Docs, they

can turn on screen reader
setting and use Voice typing
to support their learning
needs.
