Elimination
• The elimination phase occurs when cancer cells are eradicated
by a competent immune system.

In Infants:
80–90% of infants infected during the first year of life develop chronic
infections
In adults:
The second dose should be given along with DPT at 6 weeks and
third dose at 14 weeks. For babies who are not available at birth,
vaccination should not be denied.
FDA-approved vaccines
• The first TAAs were discovered after the cloning of gene-encoding proteins
that generated epitopes recognised by tumour reactive TILs .
• The first gene discovered that was to encode a tumour antigen recognised
by T cells was MAGE-1.
• Since the discovery of MAGE-1, a large number of TAAs have been described
Shared TAAs
-classified in three main groups,
• cancer/testis antigens,
• overexpressed antigens and
• differentiation antigens
• Cancer testis antigens (CT) are a large family of TAAs expressed
in human tumours of different histological origins but not in
normal adult tissues, with the exception of immune-privileged
cells such as testis and placenta
• However, the phase 3 clinical trial in stage III/IV patients did not
demonstrate prolongation of OS in the whole cohort of patients
• BiovaxID is a patient-specific therapeutic cancer vaccine composed of the
patient clonal immunoglobulin molecule idiotype vaccine conjugated to
the adjuvant KLH.
• The PILLAR trial for borderline resectable (stage II) and advanced
unresectable (stage III) pancreatic adenocarcinoma patients,
combining the vaccine with FOLFIRINOX or gemcitabine/nab-
paclitaxel and chemoradiation, is currently ongoing.
Heat shock protein vaccines
• Heat shock proteins (HSPs) are a group of intracellular protein
chaperones.
• They therefore kill tumour cells, & also inturn induce activation of innate
and adaptive immune responses through immunogenic tumour cell death.
