FAMOUS PERSONALITIES IN

MEDICINE
Student:Ana Macovei
Teacher:Catarau Elena
The high quality of medical care we enjoy today is built upon years of effort by physicians, physician-
scientists, PhDs, and other medical professionals investigating the causes of and potential treatments for
disease. The tireless effort of these professionals has made many once life-threatening diseases and
conditions just a memory.
However, there is still much work to be done. Insights provided by medical research today promise to
lessen the impact of our greatest health problems, including diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. As science
continues to unravel the molecular workings that underpin disease, we will see profound changes in the
approach to treatments.
Researchers are at the forefront in this revolution in medical knowledge. To capitalize on the advances that
have been made in our understanding of disease, a majority of our research projects are translational in
nature. Translational medical research seeks to take the medical discoveries that have been made in a
laboratory setting and move them into medical practices that can be used by physicians to improve the
lives of their patients.
When you support medical research, you are helping to build the future of medicine. With the partnership
of individual and corporate donors, we are able to make significant headway in advancing medical
knowledge and improving patient care.
ARSENIE GUȚAN 1927-2010

Arsenie Guţan was born on March 13, 1927, in the meadow of the legendary Răut, in
Mitoc, Orhei County, the 7th child out of the 11 of Manole and Eufrosinia Guţan's

in the positions of: head of the Department of Dentistry, then OMF Surgery, dean of
the Faculty of Dentistry.
ARSENIE GUȚAN

In 1965 he defended his doctoral thesis in medical sciences with the topic:
"Osteosynthesis of the mandible through heterogeneous constructions", and in
1982 - the doctoral (habilitated doctor) in medical sciences with the topic: "Current
aspects of the problem of congenital cleft lip and palate" .

During his сareer, he trained 7 doctors in medical sciences and consulted the
preparation of 3 doctoral theses. He is the author of over 130 scientific papers,
including 3 monographs, 2 corrections, 1 compendium, 3 methodological
indications, 2 inventions and 23 innovations, he holds the title of Inventor of the
USSR.
BORIS ȘARAPOV (1897-1969)

The illustrious scientist Boris Sharapov, the founder of the national school of neurosurgery in
Moldova.
From the very beginning of his activity, Boris Sharapov showed special qualities as a clinician
and scientific researcher, which allowed the young researcher to become, in a short time, a
lecturer at the Department of Nervous Diseases of the Institute for the Improvement of
Physicians in Leningrad. In 1935, he defended his dissertation as a doctor habilitat in medical
sciences, and in 1940 he was awarded the title of professor.

Professor Boris Sharapov was one of the world's most renowned illustrious neurologists. The
approximately 90 original scientific papers, including 6 monographs, address the
fundamental problems of the nervous system, cerebral and nodular vascular pathologies, as
well as the clinical and morphopathological manifestations of the reticular substance. His
monographs have been translated into several foreign languages, the author being
considered a pioneer in this field.
PAUL EHRLICH (1854-1915)

 Paul Ehrlich is a renowned scientist in the fields of virology, immunology and serology, and
performed instrumental work in developing vaccines for diseases such as syphilis and diphtheria.
Paul was born to a prominent German Jewish family on the outskirts of the Empire, and was
inspired as a young child by a cousin, who was a scientist by profession, to begin studying
microscopic life forms. After graduating from a prestigious secondary academy, Ehrlich began a
career of formal scientific inquiry, attending several prominent universities in his quest for further
knowledge about what microscopes could reveal. In the course of performing invaluable research
into the fundamental processes of cellular biology, Ehrlich developed and patented several new
analysis techniques that are still used today. After graduating from an elite university with a
doctorate in medicine, he became the head physician at a prestigious hospital and continued to
develop his work into immunology and serology. After nearly succumbing to a bout of
tuberculosis, he developed several revolutionary new theories that led, in part, to the discovery of
functional vaccines for syphilis, diphtheria and other immunological illnesses. After a lifetime of
dedication to new scientific knowledge and helping other human beings, Ehrlich passed away
from natural causes, and his death was lamented by the German Emperor, Wilhelm II, as well as
lovers of knowledge around the world.
MICHAEL S. BROWN (1941-2012)

 Michael S. Brown is an American geneticist who won a share of the Nobel Prize in
Physiology or Medicine in 1985. Best known for his work on the metabolism of cholesterol in
the human body, he worked in collaboration with Joseph L. Goldstein to research on
cholesterol metabolism and discovered that human cells have low-density lipoprotein (LDL)
receptors that extract cholesterol from the bloodstream. The duo then worked together to
develop new drugs with cholesterol-lowering compounds which is today used by millions of
people around the world. The son of a salesman, he graduated from the College of Arts and
Sciences of the University of Pennsylvania before earning his MD from the University Of
Pennsylvania School Of Medicine. After getting his degree he spent the next two years as
intern and resident in Internal Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
This is where he met Joseph L. Goldstein, a fellow intern, with who he formed a long term
personal friendship and professional collaboration. Brown and Goldstein began their
research on cholesterol metabolism in humans and over the years made many significant
discoveries in the field and also developed new drugs to manage cholesterol. In recognition
of their work, the duo was honored with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1985.
CONCLUSION

I think that the importance of these people is vital for further progress in these
areas.
I also think we have a major problem in Moldova, the state underpays and
undervalues these personalities aswell as the regular people do not give them as
much credit as they diserve.
If we continue to neglect these natural talents we might run out of people that
show the world that we as a country can also mean something for the international
population and our country might not have a big name in this world.
The truth is that there are many personalities that Moldova has brought to this
world that have made big progress towards bigger goals on this world.
