answer to each of the questions.
From white tea to black tea, oolong tea, and green tea, there are various types of tea that people
consume on a day-to-day basis nowadays. Although many people only drink teas for the soothing feeling and
sweet tastes they offer, studies have shown that they are capable of enhancing your mental health.
Studies suggest that the amino acid L-theanine found in the tea plant alters the attention networks in
the brain and has demonstrable effects on brain waves, leading to a feeling of relaxation without making you
feel sleepy. In one study, subjects who drank tea produced more accurate results during an attention task and
also felt more alert than subjects who did not. Green tea, in particular, has been shown to help individuals relax
and concentrate more fully on tasks.
The polyphenols in tea can contribute to better cognitive performance and working memory. A recent
study with elderly participants has shown that green tea helps slow the age-related decline in brain function
such as declining memory, cognitive impairment and dementia. Further early-stage research on the benefits of
tea for preventing Alzheimer’s disease has led to promising results, finding that a component of green tea can
disrupt the build-up of brain plaques, which can prevent blood from flowing into your brain or damage nerve
cells.
Finally, tea has been shown to reduce the effects of a stressful event. Participants in one study reported
that symptoms of stress such as stiffness of the shoulders, fatigue of the eyes and headaches decreased after
drinking 4 cups of oolong tea every day for a week. Black tea has also been shown to reduce stress hormone
levels if consumed regularly.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions.
Stories of poor people digging through garbage bags to find anything they can reuse or recycle have
sadly become all too common. However, in the Filipino capital city of Manila, the poor are not just looking for
re-usable goods among the rubbish but for food to feed their families. They call this kind of discarded food
pagpag, meaning "shaking off the dirt".
After many years of scavenging, Myrna Salazar, a 40-year-old Manila resident, insists she can identify
spoiled meat, which she leaves. “If the food is as soft as this, it can’t be eaten,” she says, pinching meat that has
gone bad. “But if the pork or chicken is as hard as this, this is the pagpag meat we collect,” she continues,
“We’re used to eating it. We clean the meat thoroughly to remove the smell and so that it will taste good.”
Salazar has no concerns about the health risks of eating pagpag. “If you have a strong immune system, it’s rare
for you to get sick,” she says. “We don’t need to spend our money to buy food in the market. Sometimes we
find rice, cooking oil and soy sauce in the garbage, all for free.”
Cristopher Sabal, a senior technical officer at the National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC), expresses
his sympathy for the plight of those surviving on pagpag, but he is firmly against claims that pagpag can be
eaten “safely” if you are strong enough, or that unsanitary or harmful meat can be detected and avoided. “You
cannot see bacteria, you cannot see how dirty leftover meat is just by looking,” he says. “We can definitely say
it has an impact in the stunting of growth in children. Aside from that, they would be at risk of acquiring critical
diseases like hepatitis A, cholera, typhoid.”
Despite the dangers, the sad reality is that poor Filipino families with too many mouths to feed still has
to rely on pagpag. Susana Abrera, 60, often buys from Salazar to prepare dinner for her husband and two
grandchildren. "We are cautious … If pagpag tastes and smells sour it means the meat is already spoiled and
we give it to the pigs and dogs. If we feel sick, we go to the health centre and they can detect our ailment."
Still, she yearns for her grandchildren to improve their circumstances some day. “I want them to have a good
life far from our lives here. I tell them to study hard and some day not eat pagpag.”

The “Ghosts” On Your Map

Although we rely on them a lot, you will be surprised to hear that maps can be wrong. And in many cases,
these errors are not accidental, but by (46) ___________. But there’s actually a good reason for this: if you create
a map that is completely accurate, there’s nothing to stop (47) __________ people from copying your work, and

So, to protect their work, many map-makers, or cartographers, (48) __________ a simple but effective
method. They add small errors or jokes somewhere in the map, (49) ___________ act as a kind of watermark for
