Introduction
 An operating system is an organized collection of programs that
acts as an interface between machine hardware and users
providing users with a set of facilities and maintains of
programs and at the same time controlling the allocation of
resources to cause efficient operation.

Tasks of Operating System
 Processing commands: Operating system interprets instructions or
commands entered through the input media such as keyboard.

 Multitasking: Operating system allows to do multitask, that is, to perform

multi tasks, at the same time with different programs.

 Multithreading: Most applications process data and commands

sequentially, that is, when one task is finished they being another.

 Multi-user support: Some operating systems are designed so that many

users can be connected to the operating system at the same time.

 Multiprocessor support: Some applications need huge processing power. In

multiprocessing environment any one can do any types of jobs.

Characteristics of Operating System
 There are a variety of characteristics in operating system.
 the main characteristics of an operating system are the following:

 Character-based or graphical or graphical user interface (GUI)

 Single tasking or multitasking
 Single threading or multithreading
 Weak or strong
 8-, 16-, 32- and 64- bit processed at a time
 Portable or non portable

Classification of Operating System

In general operating system can be classified as follows:

 Batch processing operating system

 Multitasking operating system
 Multiprogramming or concurrent programming operating system
 Multi processing system
 Time shared multiprogramming operating system
 Real time operating system, and
 Network operating system

Conclusion
 Operating system is a system software installed on a
computer system that performs several key tasks, such as
process management, device management, etc . An operating
system also secures the computer system from various
threats such as virus and unauthorized access.

 There are different types of operating system such as multi-

user, batch processing and embedded.
