CAN and LIN network

Presented by Duong Anh Kiet

1. CAN network
What is CAN:
• A serial bus
network of microcontrollers that
connects devices, sensors and
actuators in a system or sub-
system.
Benefits:
• Low-Cost, Lightweight Network
• Broadcast Communication
• Priority
• Error Capabilities
Voltage and Bit rates

Maximum bit rate Bus length

1 MBits/s 40 m
500 kBits/s 100 m
250 kBits/s 250 m
125 kBits/s 500 m
40 kBits/s 1,000 m
Data Frame

• Arbitration Field
• Control Field
• Data Field
• CRC
• Acknowledge Field
• End of Frame Field
2. LIN network
What is LIN (Local Interconnect Network)
• LIN is a local subsystem located within a demarcated
installation space.
• Suitable for low data rates of up to 20 kBit/s
• Typically limited to a maximum of 16 bus subscribers.
Applications
Low bit rates and basic
messages application
• Door lock, door mirror
• Power window drive
• Power-sunroof drive
• Wiper motor
• Air-conditioning system
• Seat adjustment
• Garage door-opener
Features and benefits
• Single-wire implementation
•  Limited 20Kbps data rates
• One master, up to 16 slave
nodes
LIN Data frame
• Break
• SYNC
• Identifier
• Data field
• Checksum
