Classification
What is aptitude tests?
 Aptitude tests are standardized instruments
assessing specific cognitive, perceptual, or
physical skills.
 Aptitude tests are also useful for program
evaluation and answering research
questions based on scientific inquiry.
 In most cases, aptitude tests are administered
in group format.
 Example: Aptitudes are natural abilities
They have to do with heredity. Musical talent and artistic talent are
examples of such aptitudes. Some people can paint beautifully but cannot
carry a tune. Others are good at talking to people but slow at paperwork.
History of Aptitude Tests
 Developed during world war 2.
 Carl Brigham a psychologist developed this

test.
 In 1948, the Educational Testing Service was

chattered and the SAT was on its way to


becoming the basic college admissions device
for millions.
Aptitude Tests in School
Educational Aptitude Tests
Some schools administer aptitude tests to
students beginning in elementary school.
Along with intelligence tests and achievement
tests that measure student mastery of
academic content, aptitude tests may be used
to determine placement in gifted and talented
programs or other specific educational tracks.

 For example, the Modern Language Aptitude
Test measures a student's potential for
successfully mastering foreign languages.
Aptitude tests can also help determine if a
student needs special education services.
Counselors might use high scores in a test in
mechanical reasoning, for example, to guide
a student toward courses that prepare them
for engineering or designing studies in
college.
Different types of aptitude tests
 Numerical Reasoning
These demonstrate your ability to deal with
numbers quickly and accurately.
 Verbal Reasoning
These tests assess your understanding and
comprehension skills. These are typically
multiple choice.
 Diagrammatic Reasoning
These tests assess your logical reasoning
ability under a strict time pressure.
 Situational Judgement
These tests assess how you approach
situations encountered in the workplace.
 E-tray Exercise
An In-Tray simulation or that assesses how
well you can prioritise a number of tasks.
 Error Checking
These tests assess a candidate’s ability to
identify errors and assess the correctness of
information.
 Personality Tests
A series of questions that ensure the breadth
of possible personality traits are measured.
 Cognitive Ability
A measurement of general intelligence,
covering many different categories of
aptitude testing.
 Spatial Awareness
 These tests assess your ability to mentally
manipulate images.
