IMPORTANCAE OF HABERDASHER

 HABERDASHER—a hatmaker—a CARPENTER, a WEAVER, a clothing DYER.These men all


belonged to the same workingmen's union, called a guild. Because they belonged to the same
guild, they all wore the same clothing too, which seemed to have been made just recently.
• -Is a pilgrim that shares a story on the ride to Canterbury
• -Tells a story about a wise successful man
• -This helps define the kind of person he is.
HABERDASHER CHARACTER

• He was amongst the fraternity Chaucer mentions. During the medieval times, this hat maker was probably using a cloth called
chaperon to make hats. Both men and women wore these types of hats; beaver hats became popular. Women also wore veils
on their head to hide their hair .
• Makes hats for kings, queens, and noble people
• -His clothes were a symbol of his social status
• Besides their wives declared it was their due,
• Or else for certain they had been to blame.
• It's good to hear "Madam" before one's name,
• And go to church when all the world may see,
• Having one's gown carried right royally."
• And their wives are also well-dressed and rich, going to church on a Sunday wearing their most
expensive as a form of showing off.
• Haberdashers in the Middle Ages dealt in clothing, including hats and the like. Since staying fashionable
was important in Chaucer's time, his Haberdasher has a fairly good lot in life.
