Topic: Report on Satisfaction of workers in
furniture factories in Bangladesh

“New Bengal Furniture Complex”


History of the Industry
■ 2nd highest employment opportunity giver
■ Around 70% production is home furniture and 30% is office furniture
■ The domestic market is showing an upward trend which currently worth BDT 67 Billion
■ There have been several changes to this law, and more limitations have been imposed
by government and the industry became import oriented.
■ Most of the materials need to be imported. The tariffs on these materials are absurdly
high. The import duties for all solid wood are at 10.72% while the duty on particle
wood is at 92.3%
■ The demand of the furniture is going global as well satisfying the local need

■ Situated on 0.4 bigha land in Satarkul, Uttar Badda, Dhaka
■ Founded by Md. Ershad in year 2000
■ Two own shop near Kuril-Pragati Sharani
■ 60 workers in the factory

Objectives

■ Identifying the working environment of the workers.


■ Identifying the relations between supervisors and the workers.
■ Analyzing their job satisfaction.
■ Finding out whether they are happy or not with the pay scale.
■ Identifying whether they will change the job or not.
Methodology
Sample size 10 and set of twenty-three questions
- hesitant to answer
- had to translate in Bangla
- didn’t understood the Likert scale properly

Data Collection
i) Primary : Interview with workers, line manager & Shop sales manager
ii) Secondary: Different related websites and Facebook page

• 80% of workers generally agreed that lighting is good
• 70% of workers were not satisfied by the working conditions
• 50% of workers thought that their supervisors interfered

Relational Factor
• 50% were neutral about support from supervisors
• 100% agreed that relations with supervisors were good
• Also 100% agreed that they receive training for their job
Job Factor
• 90% agreed to take additional responsibility on their job
• 50% generally agreed their work schedule matches with requirements
• 80% of workers are satisfied with their job security

Financial Factor
• 30% are happy and 30% are unhappy about pay scale
• 80% said they get adequate bonus
• 40% said promotion is linked to seniority
Impact Factor
• 60% are happy with their current team while others being neutral
• All 100% workers were confident about their success

Calculations
• The mean of our data set is 161
• The standard deviation is 47
• The coefficient of variation is 0.29
• Since the coefficient of variation is less than 1 we can conclude that
our data is neutral and not skewed in any direction.
Recommendations
■ The working environment of the factory should be improved
■ The relation between supervisor and the workers should be improved.
■ The workers should be given flexibility to take holiday for once without cutting his
salary.
■ The workers should be given bonus to keep their spirits high.
■ The workers who performs well year round should be given additional bonus to
motivate him or other workers.
