THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STORY TELLING

AND STUDENT’S SPEAKING ABILITY OF SEVENTH


GRADE STUDENTS AT SMP N 2 GONDANG
INTRODUCTION

Background of the research

● According to (Richard, 2008) as foreign language learners,


we must master speaking skills in English as our priority.
● Speaking is communication or conversations between two
people are exchanging information or they have a
communication or conversation needs (Doff, 1988)
HOW TO IMPROVING SPEAKING SKILL ?

• Teacher uses some techniques in teaching speaking


• Storytelling is one of the techniques that can be applied in
learning speaking

• This activity has many benefits which can improve students'


speaking skills, build student confidence, communication
skills, improve student vocabulary, and fluency with
language.
Problem Indetification
a.The students are lack of ability to speak

b. Students do not master basic vocabulary so they have difficulty


learning compose sentences in speaking.

c. Students lack confidence in speaking, making their pronunciation


unclear

d. The teacher have not found a suitable method in learning speaking

e. Students need input and support to improve their performance


Problem Limitation
Based on the identification of the problems above, the
research currently carried out is limited to overcome the
problems based on items a, b, and c, namely to improve
all aspects and their speaking skills of seventh grade
students of SMP N 2 Gondang.
This research is conducted in order to answer the questions:

1. Is there a correlation between story telling method


and students' speaking abilities?

2. How can students' speaking skills improve with


that method?
The Objectives of the Research :
1. To analyze the correlation between story telling
and student’s speaking skill

2. To prove how storytelling technique can enhance


students’ speaking ability
Research Significance

• For students - Students' understanding of English vocabulary


and speaking skill will improve.

• For teachers - Story telling can be tried in teaching speaking so


that the teaching and learning process becomes effective and
fun
Literature Review
Theoretical Framework
• According to (Hornby, 1995) speaking is making use of words in an ordinary
voice, offering words, knowing and being able to use a language expressing
one-self in words, and making speech.

• (Brown, 2000) said in teaching oral communication will help provide some
perspective for more practical considerations.

• (Stanley, 2009) Story Telling is an oral activity to grab audiences attention by


using multy-sensory stirring emotion of an event in a story, it involves
improvisation in telling stories, facial gestures, and body movements
