Milky Way Galaxy

OUR
• SOLAR
Located in an outer spiralSYSTEM
arm of the Milky Way.
• consists of the star, Sun and Planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars,
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
• Planets revolves around the Sun due to higher gravitational force
of Sun.
• There are also dwarf Planets such as Pluto.
• Dozens of moons are there.
• Millions of asteroids, comets and meteorites.
• Solar system formed 4.5 billion years ago.
• Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are composed of rock and metal.
(terrestrial planets)
• Two large planets Jupiter and Saturn are gas giants composed of
Hydrogen and Helium.
• Two outermost planets Uranus and Neptune are ice giants.
ASTEROIDS, COMETS & METEORS
 Asteroids (minor planets) are rocks, left over from the early formation of our
solar system. (4.6 billion years ago)
 Most of are found orbiting Sun between Mars and Jupiter within main
asteroid belt.
 They are 530 km in diameter.

 Comets are frozen leftovers from the formation of solar system.

 Composed of dust rock and ice.
 They orbit closer to the Sun.
 that’s why they heat up and make a glowing tail of dust and gas.

 Meteoroids are objects in space that range in size from dust grains to small
asteroids. (Space rocks.)
 When meteoroids enters in Earth’s atmosphere at high speed and burn up
they are called “ Meteors”.
OUR HOME
• When the solar system settled into its current layout about 4.5
billion years ago.
• Earth formed, when gravity pulled swirling gas and dust in to
become the third planet from the Sun.
• Only astronomical object in Solar System which sustain life.
• 71 % water, 29 % land.
• Moon is Earth’s only satellite.
• Revolves around sun in 365.25 days.
• Earth to moon distance is 384, 400 km.
• Earth to Sun distance is 148.83 million km.
