Praise & Worship

History of Christian Worship
● Began in the Nation of Israel
○ Branched off after the life, death, resurrection, ascension of Jesus
○ Apostles/disciples searched the scriptures and contemplated the events of Jesus’ life
● Apostles began churches and established values & worship
● The church today reformed and reverted back to the early church
○ Scriptures
○ Songs
What is ‘Worship’?
● Not merely a song and music
● Worship encompasses the entire life of an individual
● Acts of worship
○ Obedience
○ Song
○ Dance
○ Prayer
○ Service
○ Church attendance
● It is a lifestyle, not a momentary action
Praise and Worship
● Impacted by the Old Testament scriptures
○ Psalm 71:23 - “My lips will shout for joy when I sing praise to you - I whom you have delivered.”
● Recognizes worship can be performed through music/singing
● Psalmist encourages others to take part
● King David hired musicians and singers
Dance
● Nation of Israel brought about dancing
● King David danced
● The Israelites would dance upon victory in battle
● Others would dance as an act of praise

Psalm 149:3-4 - “Let them praise his name with dancing and make music to him with timbrel and harp.
For the Lord takes delight in his people; he crowns the humble in victory.’'
Sacrifice
● Animal, drink, grain offerings
○ Offered as an act of worship to the Lord
● Offerings that covered certain types of sins
● Voluntary offerings

Psalm 54:6 - “I will sacrifice a freewill offering to you; I will praise your name, Lord, for it is good.”
Music & Singing
● Song was incredibly common in the early church
● Sang psalms, hymns, and songs of the Spirit
● Wrote many songs about Jesus’ life
○ Sang scriptures

Acts 16:25 - “About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other
prisoners were listening to them.”
Fellowship of Believers
● Act of worship is gatherings of believers
● Early church would gather in small groups
● Believers also met in the Temple
● Place of congregated worship in song, scripture, Spiritual gifts, and encouragement

Matthew 18:20 - “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”
Today’s Church
● Reformed in many aspects
● Larger gatherings
● Reflect aspects of the early church
● Differs amongst denomination of church
