Why ethics and values?

Everyone involved in health care should have a fundamental concern with issues

of values and ethics.

Without this concern we cannot consider ourselves as engaged in health care at

all.

“Why do I need to think about this? I might work in health social care, but I’m never likely to be
in a situation where a patient is asking me to help them die. And if it did happen, I’d simply go to
someone in authority and tell them what had happened. They would decide what to do.”

What sort of problems do think there might be with this kind of response?

Do you think the NHS should pay for obese children and teenagers to have this kind of expensive

treatment?

[write your response in the chat bar but don’t send it until I tell you]

Do you think the value of ‘better living’ is down to the responsibility of the individual? Or does

society hold responsibility for the ‘better living’ of its members?

04/09/2021 LEVEL 4 | ETHICS AND VALUES | BA (HONS) INTEGRATED HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE 16
We need to examine the values that underpin our actions, and the ethics of those actions

themselves, because they are responses to the task of creating better (or more tolerable) lives –

and these lives are valued, one way or another, by those whose lives they are.

(Duncan 2010: 14)
