Based on my preliminary research at STKIP
PGRI Bandar Lampung, I found that students’ ability in writing business letter need to be improved. The students found difficulties in using correct grammar in their writing because they are not mastering grammar well. The Identicitaion of Probem Based on the background of the problem, the writer identifies the problem as follows:
1. The students’ ability in writing business letter
need to be improved 2. The students’ grammar mastery need to be improved. The Limitation of Problem Based on the identification of problem, the writer focused on the analysis of the students’ grammatical error in theirs writing business letter. The Formulation of Problem Based on the limitation problem above, the writer formulated the problem as follows: 1. What types of grammatical errors are faced by the students in making business letter? 2. What are the sources of grammatical errors are faced by the students in making business letter? The Objectives of The Research The objectives of the research are: 1. To know and describe the types of students grammatical errors are faced by students in writing business letter. 2. To know and describe the sources of students grammatical errors in writing business letter. The Uses of The Research The uses of the research are: 1. To give information about the students’ grammatical errors in writing business letter. 2. To give information for further research with certain interest. 3. To motivate the students in learning English. Error Analysis Errors analysis is a study of identifying, describing and classifying the noticeable error that is made by the students in learning process. The Concept of Business Letter Business letter is a formal letter that has function as the way to communicate between two or more company. Business letter can be function to convey the information, persuasive, motivation or promotion. Business letter must be written clearly, briefly and politely. The Language Feature of Business Letter there are ten characteristics of business writing, they are: 1. Readable 2. Tactful 3. Personal 4. Positive 5. Active 6. Unified 7. Coherent 8. Clear 9. Concise 10. Mechanically sound Required Elements in Business Letter • Letterhead or Heading • The date which the letter is written. • The inside address • A salutation • The body of the business letter • A closing • The writer’s signature Types of Business Letter 1. Making requests 2. Make complaints 3. Give information 4. Make recommendation Example of Business Letter The Method of Research In conducting the research, the writer will use descriptive normative method. It means, the writer will get the data from the students by giving a writing test and then analyze the data. The writer will describe and solves about the students’ grammatical errors in writing business letter. The Data Collecting Technique • In collecting data, the writer will use writing test. The students will be given limited time to make an business letter in 2 x 35 minutes. The students should do the test in order to get the data or result about students’ ability in writing business letter. The Population of the Research • The population of the research is all the students of the fourth of STKIP PGRI Bandar Lampung in 2015/2016. The total numbers are 99 from two classes. Sample • In Conducting the research, I would like to take 50 % of the students or 50 students as the sample of the research Sampling Technique • In getting the sample of technique, I would like to use Stratified Proportional Random Sampling Technique. Example of the Topic You are a sales representative for your company. Write a letter to Mike Ronald of PT Fonterra Indonesia, introducing one of your new products or services. Be sure to give important details about your product/ service. Data Analysis • In analyzing the data of the research, I would like to use precentage.
