Polya’s problem-
solving strategy
• “A great discovery solves a great
problem but there is a grain of discovery
in the solution of any problem. Your
problem may be modest; but if it
challenges your curiosity and brings into
play your inventive faculties, and if you
solve it by your own means, you may
experience the tension and enjoy the
triumph of discovery.” – George Polya

SAMPLE • A math class has 30 students.
Approximately 70% passed their last
PROBLEM math test. How many students didn’t
passed the last math test?
#1

UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM.

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

We are looking for how many students passed the last math test.
DEVISE A PLAN.
WHAT CAN WE DO TO FIND THE ANSWER?
SAMPLE
A number that is 70% of 30.
PROBLEM CARRY OUT THE PLAN.

#1 SOLVE FOR THE PROBLEM.

70% = 0.70
(0.70)(30) = 21

PROBLEM.
• We are looking for two numbers, and
since we can write the one number in
terms of another number, we will let

x = another number
DEVISE A PLAN.
SAMPLE • Translate the problem into a
PROBLEM mathematical equation.
2 (x - 1) = x + 4
#2
CARRY OUT THE PLAN.
2 (x - 1) = x + 4
(2x - 2) = x + 4
2x - x = 4 + 2
X=4+2
X=6
REVIEW THE SOLUTION.
SAMPLE
X = 6; label x as 6
PROBLEM
2 (6 - 1) = 6 + 4
#2 2 (5) = 10
10 = 10

Final answer:
The number to be found is 6.
• There was a computing error in Missy's grading

SAMPLE report card for one of her four major subjects. She had
received her grades on Algebra III, Science and Social
Studies. She received a grade of 92% in Algebra III,
PROBLEM 88% in Social Studies and 94% in Science. Her total
average in these four subjects is said to be 93%. What

#3 would her grade in English IV be?

UNDERSTAND THE
PROBLEM.

We are looking for Missy’s missing grade in English IV.

DEVISE A PLAN.
SAMPLE We have the following:
PROBLEM 92% = Algebra III
88% = Social Studies
#3 94% = Science
X??= English IV
93% = total average

The formula for this problem is…

(92% + 88% + 94% + X??)/4 = 93%
CARRY OUT THE PLAN.
SAMPLE
= 93%
PROBLEM
= 93%
#3

= 93(4)

88+92+94 + x = 93(4)

274 + x = 372

x = 98 x = 372 - 274
REVIEW THE SOLUTION.
SAMPLE X = 98
PROBLEM

= 93%

Final answer:
Missy has a grade of 98% for her 93 = 93
English IV.
• One number is 3 TIMES less than
SAMPLE another number. If the sum of the two
numbers is 177, find each number.
PROBLEM
#4 UNDERSTAND THE
PROBLEM.

• X = ANOTHER NUMBER
• X – 3 = NUMBER 3 TIMES LESS
THAN ANOTHER NUMBER
DEVISE A PLAN.
SAMPLE
• THE SUM OF THE TWO NUMBERS IS
PROBLEM 177.
#4 (X1 - 3) + X2 = 177

CARRY OUT THE PLAN.

X1 = 90 X – 3 + X = 177
2X – 3 = 177
X2 = A number 3 times less
than x… 2X = 177 + 3
90 - 3 = 87 =
REVIEW THE SOLUTION.
SAMPLE X1 = 90

PROBLEM X2 = x1 – 3 (87)

#4 X1 + x2 = 177
90 + 87 = 177
177 = 177

Final answer:
The two numbers that adds up 177, is 90
and 87.
