HOLY WEEK
THE BIBLICAL STORIES AND THE LITURGY
Holy week is the period wh
en God’s way to salvation
and
 access to heaven was
achieved

• How?
• Jesus became the perfect sacrifice for the guilt offering
• He also became the High Priest
• All requirements for the perfect sacrifice was achieved once for all time
• Now man has direct access to God
• Then Jesus, God, rested from His work on the Sabbath
• Then the final victory over death was manifested by Jesus’ resurrection
Palm Sunday (Domingo de Ramos)
Jesus came to Jerusalem to celebrate the
festival of Passover.
He rode into the city on a donkey
The people welcomed him waving palm
leaves and shouting Hosanna, a prayer of
praise and adorations which meant ‘save
(us) now’
Read (Mark 11:7-10)
This marks the beginning of Holy Week
which remembers the events leading up to
the death and resurrection of Jesus.
In this, some people make crosses out of
Palm Leaves.

Holy Thursday

At the Lord’s Supper today

Jesus ‘commands’ his disciples
to love one another.
It was the Jewish festival of
Passover and Jesus celebrated
with his disciples in Jerusalem.
Jesus changed the Passover
celebration, first he washed the
feet of his friends.
Holy Thursday

The job of washing feet was

usually a servant’s job, Jesus did
this as a symbolic act to show he
had come to serve and his
disciples are to do the same –
serve others in humble love.

During the Last Supper, Jesus

declared the bread and wine have
become his Body and Blood.

Judas slipped out during the meal

to betray Jesus.

Read (John 13:1-20)

Prusisyon ng Banal na
Sakramento

Maringal na pagsamba sa Banal na

Sakramento hanggang hatinggabi.
After the meal, Jesus and
the disciples went to the Good Friday
Garden of Gethsemane to
pray.
The disciples fell asleep,
and Jesus called out to
God for help. This is
often referred to as the
agony in the garden,
because Jesus knew he
was going to die.
Shortly afterwards,
Judas arrived with
soldiers to arrest Jesus,
he betrayed Jesus with a
kiss.
Read (Mark 14:32-52)
 Jesus was taken to the High Priest’s Good Friday
house in the middle of the night.

 He was accused of the crime of

blasphemy which means speaking
against religion.

 Many lies were told against Jesus

but the evidence against him did not
add up.

 Peter, one of the disciples followed

Jesus, but was recognised, and out
of fear he denied ever knowing
Jesus just as Jesus predicted he
would

 Read ( Mark 14:53-72)

Good Friday
Jesus was handed over to
the Roman Governor Pontius
Pilate.

It was the custom at this time

for the Romans to release a
prisoner because it was
Passover.

The High Priests bribed the

crowd to shout for Barabbus.

So Barabbas was freed and

Jesus was sent to the cross.
Good Friday
Jesus was whipped, and
was made to wear a crown
of thorns.

The soldiers dressed him

in a robe and mocked him.

Jesus was made to carry

the cross through the
streets of Jerusalem until
he reached Golgotha (the
place of the skull) on the
outskirts of the city.
Good Friday
Simon of Cyrene was
made to help Jesus carry
the cross.

When Jesus reached

Golgotha he was crucified,
the sign above his head
read ‘Jesus of Nazareth,
King of the Jews’ (INRI).

Jesus was crucified with

two thieves next to him,
one on each side.
Good Friday
Jesus cried out ‘My God
my God why have you
forsaken me?’
Mary the mother of Jesus
and some of his
followers were present at
the crucifixion.
 Jesus died in the
afternoon, around three
o’clock.
The Temple curtain
ripped from top to
bottom and the Earth
shook. The sky turned
black.
Good Friday
The Roman soldiers
divided Jesus’ clothes
among themselves by
throwing a dice.

Jesus was taken down

from the cross because it
was the Sabbath.

The body of Jesus was

given to Joseph of
Arimathea, he wrapped the
body in a sheet and placed
it in a new tomb. (Mark 15:
42ff.)
Good Friday
The body could not
be anointed
because the
Sabbath was about
to begin.
The tomb was sealed, or
guarded.
Read any of the Gospel
accounts and look for
similarities and
differences.

pagbibinyag.
ANG PAGTATANGHAL SA LIWANAG

Matapos nito gaganapin ang Exultet o

ang Maringal na Pagpapahayag ng
Muling Pagkabuhay. Ito ay sinaunang
imno ng pagpupuri sa Diyos at kay
Kristong muling nabuhay na kaliwanagan
ng mundo. Maaring ito ay mula pa sa
kapanahunan ni San Ambrosio
(ika-4 na siglo) at naging bahagi na ng
liturhiya mula pa noong ika-9 na siglo
Liturhiya ng Salita

Matapos nito ay ang pagpapahayag ng

Salita, siyam ang ating mga pagbasa:
pito mula sa Lumang Tipan, isa mula sa
Sulat ni Apostol San Pablo at ang
Ebanghelyo. Maaring hindi basahin ang
lahat ng Pagbasa sa lumang tipan,
ngunit kinakailangan magbasa ng hindi
kukulang sa tatlo at kabilang dapat dito
ang pagbasa mula sa aklat ng Exodo.
Liturhiya ng Salita

Pagkatapos ng mga pagbasa

sa Lumang Tipan, aawitin ang
Papuri at sisindihan lahat ng
ilaw sa Simbahan, nakatanggal
na ang mga tabing sa imahen,
at patutunugin ang lahat ng
kampana at batingaw rito.
Liturhiya ng Salita

Ang mga pagbasa ay nagkukwento

ng Kasaysayan ng ating Kaligtasan
at ng dakilang pag-ibig ng Diyos sa
kanyang bayan.
Simbahan. Matapos ang Liturhiya ng Salita,
ang mga inihahanda sa Binyag ay bibinyagan,
kukumpilan at kinalaunan ay tatanggap ng
unang pakikinabang tanda ng pagpasok nila
sa ating pananampalataya. Matapos nito, ang
mga binyagan na ay magsasariwa ng kanilang
mga pangako na susundan ng Panalangin ng
Bayan.
Ang Liturhiya ng
Eukaristiya
At magpapatuloy ang Misa, nang may mga
natatanging mga dagdag sa Panalangin ng
Pagpupuri at Pasasalamat (Eucharistic Prayer).
Ang buong simbahan ay inaanyayahang makisalo
sa piging ng Kordero na siya mismo ang naghain
sa pamamagitan ng Kanyang pagkamatay at
muling pagkabuhay. Magtatapos ang Misa sa
isang maluwalhating "Salamat sa Diyos, Aleluya,
Aleluya!"
Easter Sunday
The woman went to the tomb early in
the morning to anoint Jesus’ body with
spices they had prepared.
When they reached the tomb, the tomb
was empty.
In John’s account Jesus appears to
Mary Magdalene, she mistakes him for
a gardener.
One or two angels appeared and
announce that Jesus has risen from the
dead.
Easter Sunday

There are varying

accounts of sightings of
Jesus after his death.
They appear to indicate
that he was changed in
some way as people
didn’t recognise him
straight away.
Easter is the celebration
of Jesus’ triumph over
death, proving he was the
Son of God.
