A strategic board game for two players, using


checkerboard. Having precise rules using
sixteen pieces of game armies and with the
objective of putting the opponent’s king under
check from which it is impossible to escape

INDIA
Found the earliest surviving evidence of
chess dated 500 C.E.

Indian’s first name for chess is Chaturanga


which refers to the four divisions of army –
Elephants, Cavalry, Infantry and Chariotry

PERSIA
Played around 600 C.E. and named it
Shatranj. It is where the name king (sha)
and check mate (sha mat) was derived
from

EUROPE
In the 9th century, it quickly became popular in
Western Europe and spread throughout the
continent in 1000 C.E
Little modification of rules was made in
Southern Europe in 1200 C.E
Major changes were made in 1945 making the
queen the most powerful chess piece which
can move in any direction.

OTHER DEVELOPMENTS
Chess soon moved from Europe to France in the 18th century
and was played in coffee shops.
First professional tournament was held in London in 1851 and
Adolf Anderssen was the first champion of the first chess
tournament
Johannes Zukertort of Germany was the first official world
chess champion. He was defeated by Emmanuel Lasker and
held the title for 27 long years
In 1924 World Chess Federation was founded in Paris
FIDE (Federation Internationale des Echecs) became the
official world organization of chess.
