Samantha Boxberger is a music educator and performer from Leavenworth, KS. She
is a Band Director at Junction City High School. She has taught in USD 475 for 3 years.
During her first year she taught at both Fort Riley Middle and JCHS. Mrs. Boxberger
graduated from Kansas State University in the Fall of 2015 with a B.S. in Music
Education. She was involved in many organizations ranging from service groups to
musical ensembles. She is still active in many music organizations including the North
Central District of KMEA (High School Band Chair), Kansas Bandmasters Association,
Sigma Alpha Iota and Tau Beta Sigma. Professionally, she is driven as an educator to
incorporate student-driven learning, promote lifelong musicianship, and create
independent musicians who explore music and the arts beyond the band room. Outside
of school she enjoys spending time with her husband and 3 dogs, making arts and crafts
projects, hosting potlucks and attending sporting events with her friends!

Jared Morris is a music educator, performer and creator. He was appointed as band
director at Junction City High School in 2017. Prior to teaching in Kansas Mr. Morris was
the assistant conductor of the Cincinnati Youth Wind Ensemble for 2 years and the
instrumental music director at Timpanogos High School in Utah for 7 years. Ensembles
and soloists under Jared’s tutelage have received numerous region and state honors and
1st place rankings. He received his music education degrees from the University of
Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music (MM, 2017) and Brigham Young University
(BM, 2008). Jared resides with his family in Manhattan, Kansas where his wife Alyssa
teaches oboe and music theory at Kansas State University. They are the proud parents
of their children Kimball (11) and Audrey (9).

Jair Miertschin is the Director of Bands at Junction City Middle School. He is a 2013
graduate of Junction City High School. Jair received a Bachelor's of Music Education
from Kansas State University in 2018. While at K-State, Jair was involved in the Kansas
State University Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, Concert Choir and studied
flute under Dr. Karen Large. Jair has performed across the country including Texas, New
Mexico, Arizona, Tennessee, Louisiana, South Carolina, Missouri and Minnesota. Jair
currently resides in Salina, KS with his partner Chris and their cat Natasha.

Kirsten Votaw is a music educator and performer. She grew up all over the country
because of her family’s military connections. Ms. Votaw graduated from Kansas State
University in the Spring of 2018 with a BME in Music Education and accepted a position
at JCMS as a band and vocal director. While in college she performed with many
ensembles such as West African Drumming and Dancing, Percussion Ensembles, the
Pride of Wildcat Land and Wind Symphony. The knowledge she gained from participating
in these ensembles is regularly incorporated into each of her classes. She is still active in
the Manhattan Municipal Band and an active alumna member of Sigma Alpha Iota music
fraternity. Kirsten resides in Manhattan with her fiancé Ryan and puppy Phasma.

History of the
Junction City Community Band

The first Junction City municipal band, which was formed in 1868, had 13
members, only three of whom had played in a band before. The group was
called “The Junction City Cornet Band” and performed free weekly concerts
during the summer in Heritage Park. George Kilian was the
player-turned-director until 1899.

The band continued to perform in Junction City until 1963 despite a variety of
funding problems.

In 1973 the bandstand in Heritage Park was demolished due to its unsafe
condition. Under the direction of David Carlson, a summer city band played
concerts in
Heritage Park in the early 1990s.

Following a park performance by the Junction City Dixieland Band in 1995,

Mary Louise Stahl commented to the audience that Junction City needed a
community band. Local musicians in that audience showed an interest in
performing and the Junction City Community Band was organized to resume
concerts in the park in 1996.

The band concerts were moved from Heritage Park to the C.L. Hoover Opera
House in 2010, where the tradition of providing free concerts to the public has
been maintained.

With the absence of a university, college or community college music

department in our town, the Community Band relies heavily on the local
school employees for directors and the school students for players. Students
and adults from as far as Abilene and Lawrence come together to make up the
band.
How you can help
The Junction City Community Band has become entirely self-supporting. By the
close of the 2018 season, enough funds had been raised to pay for the 2019
season. All funds raised this year will go towards funding the 2020 season.

USD 475 has provided rehearsal space, instruments and sheet music and the CL
Hoover Opera House has provided rehearsal and storage space. This has been
invaluable in keeping our costs to a minimum.
