Introduction to VR

Types of virtual reality:

- Immersive VR
- Non immersive VR
 Technologies and devices enabling VR
Simulation
Applications
virtual Reality
•It is a technology which allows a
user to interact with a computer
virtual environment, be it a real
or imagine one.

•It is a term that is applied to

computer-virtual environments
that can simulate places in the
real world as well as in imaginary
worlds.
Immersive vs. Non-immersive VR

When computer generated sensory information is accurate

the operator has the impression of being immersed into the
virtual environment
This is called immersive virtual reality
To create immersive VR a head-mounted display is
required so when the user moves the head the view is
adjusted accordingly
In non-immersive VR systems user views virtual world
through the monitor or the projection screen

Devices enabling VR
LCD shutter glasses
LCD shutter glasses are the glasses used in
conjunction with digital cinema and 3-D computers to
create illusions of 3-D object. For eg. stereoscopy
HMD(head mounted display):
A head-mounted display or Helmet mounted display is a display
device, worn on the head or as part of a helmet, that has a small
display optic in front of one (monocular HMD) or each eye
(binocular HMD).
Glove-based Devices
Power glove

It is a controller accessory.

It was the first peripheral
interface controller to re-
create human hands
movement on computer
screen.
Wired glove
A wired Glove is a glove like input device for
virtual reality environments. Various sensor
technologies such as magnetic tracking device,
motion tracker are used to capture the physical data
that is bending of fingers, etc.

Simulation
Simulation is the imitation of some real thing, state of
affairs, or process. The act of simulating something
generally entails representing certain key
characteristics or behaviours of a selected physical or
abstract system.

Simulation is used in many contexts, including the

modeling of natural systems or human systems in
order to gain insight into their functioning.
Applications of simulation
Space Simulation: To create an environment as like
space such that astronauts can adapt to conditions
which they are going to face in space.
