& Prepositional
Phrases

Adjective Phrases
 Any phrase or part of a sentence that modifies a noun or
pronoun

Examples:
-The weird plane nerd
-The loud plane
-gained essential skills

Adj. phrase in a sentence:


The Wright Brothers gained essential skills for their success
through their earlier businesses.
Adverb Phrases
 A group of words that does not contain a subject or
verb, but acts as an adverb
 Adverbs tell manner, place, and time
EX: Pilots usually get up early.
 Hint: its an adverb if it can answer when, where, and/or
how

Purpose for fun AHS nerds write computer programs for


fun.
Adverb Phrases
Type Adverb Phrase Example
Manner with admiration The plane geek stared at the plane with
admiration as it flew over head.

Place next door The air field next door is annoying and
loud.
Time before the prices go It is recommended that you book your
up ticket in advanced before the prices go
up.
Frequency far too often Scott buys plane themed items far too
often.
Purpose for himself Scott bought another plane pen for
himself.
Prepositional Phrases
 Contains a preposition, a noun or pronoun as the object
of the preposition and usually an adjective to modify
the object

Examples:

Lindbergh began his historic crossing of the Atlantic on


May 20th, 1927.

The plane will leave in forty minutes.


Prepositional Phrases (cont.)
 An introductory modifier must be used when the
phrase is at the beginning of a sentence
 This is generally followed by a comma

Example:

In May of 1927, Lindbergh began his historic


crossing of the Atlantic.

 If it contains a restrictive clause a comma should not be used

To avoid the expense of travel and bringing supplies to the outer banks
they decided to set up an airfield at Huffman Prairie.

 Do not end a sentence with a preposition

Wrong – Atchison, Kansas is the place Amelia Earhart is from.

Right – Amelia Earhart is from Atchison, Kansas.


Prepositional mistakes
Examples:
“We found the address he gave me without difficulty”
-This conveys that a man gave an address without difficulty and
that it was found. What was meant to be said was “The address he
gave me was found without difficulty.”

 Where does the other 20% cheat?
 We always sell goods to people in plastic wrapping.
 I hope its not see through.
 The bride was given away by her father wearing her
grandmother’s wedding dress
 I’m sure he looked very pretty.
 Flying over the African landscape, the elephant herd looked
magnificent
 DUMBO LIVES!
