Until divisions were abolished in the year 2000 it was part of Faisalabad Division.

Language
• According to the 1998 census, Punjabi is the 
first language of 98% of the population.[The
variety of Punjabi spoken in the urban centres
of the district is known as Lyallpuri and is very
closely related to the varieties spoken in 
Jalandhar, Lahore, Sahiwal, and Gujranwala.
Urdu is the first language of only 1.2%, but it
has official status and is used in education and
administration.
