In The End: The

Concepts of
Achievement
● Writing

Concepts Used ● Action

Writing

● Writing was used throughout every

assignment I created in class. I used
a handful of different genres in
making my pieces. This included;
○ Letter - Open Letter Assignment,
Personal Letter, Reflective Letter, and
Private Letter “Dear people of education,
○ Presentation - Informative and
Through spending the last few years of my time
Reflective Project after graduating high school, and spending my
○ Blog Post - Persuasive Project days working away at getting good grades in
classes I don't necessarily like; I pondered. Do I
really need to get a degree?…” - The beginning of my
Open Letter Assignment.
Rhetoric

● Definition -
○ RHETORIC: the art of effective
or persuasive speaking or
writing, especially the use of
figures of speech and other
compositional techniques.
● When writing Rhetoric became an
important part of each assignment.
I needed to utilize the skills that I have to be used effectively in my
assignments. The two assignments I most used Rhetoric were the Informative
and Persuasive Project.
Rhetoric

● Informative Project
○ For my informative project
I asked the question of if
Higher Education is worth
it. In doing so I decided on
making the project into a
presentation. One slide I
discussed the Pros & Cons
as seen to the right.
● Persuasive Project
○ Next, in my persuasive project I decided to make it into a blog
post instead of a presentation. With this I gave 8 Reasons
why you DON’T need Higher Education. One example is #8
shown to the right.
Action

● With Action I needed to think about how I would use my words to accomplish the end
result I was looking for with each of my projects. Depending on the project I needed
to adjust how I was wording each piece. A perfect example of this would be my
Personal Letter compared to my Persuasive Project.
○ Personal Letter: This project was to write a letter to your future self in regards to
the prompts given. This was a casual letter only your eyes would see.
○ Persuasive Project: This project was talking about the social issue I chose and
persuading the audience as to why my opinion was the ‘correct’ side. (a.k.a:
persuasive.
● For both of these I needed to write in very different writing styles. With the personal
letter I didn’t need to adjust my writing style to my audience as I was only writing to
myself and the opposite for the Persuasive project as I had an audience to consider.
Action

● When looking at both the Personal Letter and the

Persuasive Project you can even tell the nature of the
pieces. The open letter was written on scrap paper and
folded into an ‘amulet of hope’ to open at a later date. It is
not detailed out and professional like the Persuasive
Project. With this one I had to
consider the genre with my
audience and adjust my
writing.
● Comparing the two projects
you can see which holds the
more power that is needed to
be used for the style of the
project.
Deliberation

● One assignment I’d like to discuss deliberation is

with my Persuasive Project. With this assignment I
had to make a handful of choices that would better
the way the writing came out. Such as; what type
of genre/medium would be used, what topic am I
discussing, who’s my audience, my purpose of the
choices made, what rhetorical strategies do I need
to use, and more.
● With each point I made in my project I had to think
of these questions and adjust my writing
accordingly.
Engagement

● Engagement is another important part of

writing. You can have an extremely
interesting topic but if you don’t engage the
reader correctly you could lose them quickly.
I have a hard time staying engaged on a
piece if it’s in essay format. So for each of -The original ‘Reflective Project’ opening (essay)

my projects regarding my social issue I decided to go a different way. For most of my

assignments I had thought to make the pieces into an essay form. But the more I went
over the options of mediums that could be used I had to wonder which would be best for
the topic I was discussing.
● An example of this is the project you’re reading now. Originally I was going to make it into
a ‘end of semester’ essay, almost like a summary essay. But thought, due to the points I
had to discuss, making a presentation instead would be better medium.
Contingency

● Contingency might be one of the most important concepts

to use as you need to adapt your writing to meet the
needs of the situation you’re writing for. Such as the
purpose, audience, and context.
● One example of where I incorporated this in my work was
during my Persuasive Project. I originally started with an
essay but had to adjust my topic to be more persuasive.
So instead of doing an essay I changed it to be more
direct. With stating; ‘8 Reasons: Why you don’t need
Higher Education’. With this is was made into a blog post
which has the opportunity to be very persuasive with the
use of pictures to show research.
Which concepts will you be able to
transfer to other areas of your life?

In the end I will be using as many

of these concepts of achievement as
possible when it comes to any future
writings I will make. Whether it be
In the End deciding the medium/genre that will best
work for my piece or the action that my
words will have for the different pieces.
I’ll be using them especially when it
comes to the workplace. I have to write
emails to customers regarding their
accounts and sometimes I need to bring
in different actions to my wording to get
what needs to be done.
