Ionic Lqiuids

What are Ionic Liquids

 Ionic Liquids (ILs) is the generic

term for a class of materials,
consisting entirely of ions and
being liquid below 100°C.

 If they are liquid at room

temperature, we call them room
temperature ionic liquids (RTILs).
What are Ionic
Liquids?
• Ionic liquids are environmentally friendly solvents, or bio-solvents
also called green solvents

• Not halogenated, non-flammable (< 100 0C), non-hazardous, non-

toxic

• Biodegradable, stable, recyclable

• Compatible
Applications of
Ionic liquids
Media for Esters &
Polymers Synthesis

• Esters are usually synthesized in organic solvents

(conventional)
• Polymers required sever conditions to be formed
• ILs can be applied as media at moderate conditions

Examples:
Phytosterols+ lauric acid→ phytosterol esters+
H 2O
lower LDL (the "bad") cholesterol in humans

L-lactide (LLA) → PLLA

biodegradable thermoplastic aliphatic polyester
Extraction of Pectin
(polysaccharide)
Pectin is a thickening agent, texturizer, an emulsifier, stabilizer and gelling
agent in food industry
It is a phenolic aldehyde. Used as flavouring agent

Extraction of
vanillin
Vanilla pods

a) appearance of commercial vanillin; b) vanillin dissolved in 20 wt % [C 4C1im]Cl; c) precipitation of

vanillin with addition of water; d) recovered vanillin
Extraction of
chlorophyll with
IL solutions
People have used chlorophyll as a health
supplement for many years. A variety of
medical studies have suggested that it
may be helpful for skin conditions, body
odors, and fighting certain kinds
of cancer.

CO2 Absorbent Healthy Environment

• Carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of the greenhouse gases said to be causing climate change.
• Because ionic liquids do not elute to a gaseous phase due to their low vapor pressure, they can be used
across a wide temperature range and are flameproof, thus safe
• Development of CO2 separation and recovery processes from combustion exhaust gases utilizing ionic
liquids is progressing.

Waterless Laundry

• •“Green” solvent + detergent package (ILs)

will clean ~20-40 loads of laundry (based on
density limits) with rinsing

• •Cleaning solvent would be filtered/recovered;

waste residue sent for disposal (after
accumulation)
Lubricants
• Lubricants are used in a variety of
mechanical systems and serve to
reduce friction between bodies and
improve energy efficiency.
• As ionic liquids have negligible
vapor pressures, their utilization as a
lubricant in vacuum is being explored.
ELECTROLYTES
• Ionic liquids are used in electrochemical
devices such as lithium-ion batteries
(LIB) and dye-sensitized solar cells
(DSSC)
• Improved battery performance by
utilizing their high electric conductivity
and high potential window.
