Feeling Safe at Salt Lake

Community College

Amairany Maldonado, Kate Luna, Juliana Mancera, Fadumo Mohamed

Objective
Our strategic communication goal is to provide information and guidance to
feel protected at school. Our plan will be targeted towards female SLCC
students that are taking on-campus classes. There are programs that a lot of
students are not aware of and our goal is to make these resources known and
utilize them a lot more. We want students to feel safe at all times and make the
learning process worry-free.
Have you seen this?
● If you’ve been coming to campus for at
least a year or two, have you seen this
sticker?

● This sticker is on every single door that

leads out of a building all around campus.

● It’s located right above the door handle.

Key Messages
We want female students who are taking evening classes to know that they have resources
available to them whenever they don’t feel safe or feel uncomfortable. Safety is our
number one priority inside and outside of school. We need to feel safe in order to learn and
stay focused in school. We want students to know that SLCC cares about their safety and
that they have provided resources for us to use. Kickboxing classes are offered here at
SLCC. You not only work out your body, you also learn punching techniques and correct
form. SLCC provides a safety escort from the campus to the parking lot. Asking for help
isn’t a sign of weakness. Know that help is there when you need it.
Deliverables
● Send out an email to all of the teachers at SLCC, that talks about our project and the main points we
want them to tell their students.

● Create an announcement banner on Canvas. Everyone uses Canvas to contact their teachers and to turn
in assignments. The banner will be the first thing that pops up when Canvas is opened.

● Putting up posters at the Life Activities Center since many students like to hang out there after class.

● Present this project at the Women’s Heritage event in March that SLCC holds every year.
Email
Dear SLCC faculty members,

For the students who are taking on-campus classes, we want to help them feel safer and more comfortable in their
learning environment. SLCC offers kickboxing classes that teach self-defense mechanisms to all students. The Department
of Public Safety at Salt Lake Community college now offers a parking lot safety escort service in which an officer can be
dispatched to escort you to your car if you ever feel uncomfortable walking alone. These resources, (along with others) can be
found in the SLCC website under the SLCCSafe tab. We need your helping in making these resources known and help
encourage students, especially the female students, to use them so they are able to learn better and feel secure on school
grounds. We believe the best time to tell your students about these resources is at the beginning of the semester and
including them in the orientation module would be a great idea. We would like to highlight that the safety of students is very
valuable and using these resources is not a sign of weakness. Thank you for your help!
