Job Description

A marketing manager is someone who promotes businesses, services, products, or

brands. They monitor market trends, create their own advertising campaigns, they establish

marketing strategies to meet their objectives. Most marketing managers work full time and they

sometimes work late (work overtime) when they have a big project that needs to be finished,

According to Career Builder, “ Marketing managers work with many different forms of media,

from more traditional newspapers and billboards to digital advertising and social platforms. They

will also motivate the employees, evaluate their performance, and fire employees who are not

doing well when necessary.

Daily Duties

On a daily basis, marketing managers brainstorm new ideas for their campaign. They

make sure that their employees are staying on top of their work and that the employees are

meeting up to their deadlines and completing the tasks when it is necessary. “To stay on current

marketing trends, marketing managers also analyze data on a daily basis to evaluate the success

of their marketing efforts and come up with new ideas to brand marketing and exposure”

(ziprecruiter). A typical day for a marketing manager, according to Owlguru, they consult with

product personnel on product specifications such as design, color, or packaging. They develop

pricing strategies, evaluate the financial aspects of product development. They have telephone

conversations everyday with either clients or other companies.

Weekly Duties

Marketing managers have weekly report meetings with their staff. For example, if they

have a meeting on a Friday, the following Monday they will execute what was talked about on
Marketing Manager 3

Friday. They have a to-do list that they look at to see what needs to be done for the week and

they schedule out their day depending on what needs to be done first. Digital marketer has come

up with an example of what a marketing manager does for a week. On Monday, they catch up on

emails, they create new reports for different statistics needed, following up with freelancers on

assigned work and assigning work, etc. On Tuesday, they brainstorm ideas, research content and

blog ideas, etc. On Wednesday, it would be filming videos, writing newsletters, blog posts, and

content meetings with graphic designers. On Thursday, they update their editorial calendar;

everything is put into a spreadsheet and it is categorized. Check the week’s report so see if there

were any changes (good or bad). On Friday, they have weekly status calls (meetings with

supervisors or executives), another weekly report meeting and discuss what happened throughout

the week.

Big responsibilities

Marketing managers have many responsibilities. They have to develop strategies and

tactics to get the word out about their company. They are responsible for managing the

promotion and positioning of a brand or the products or services that a company sells (total jobs).

They develop and manage the marketing department’s budget. They gather customer and market

insights, talk to their employees about it to improve their product or service. They try to make

valuable and engaging content to their blog and website to attract new customers. They put

together estimates and budgets of marketing campaigns, submit them for approval, and work

with advertising agencies. They are also involved in negotiations and they prepare sales and

advertising contracts.

General Career Path

To become a marketing manager you should get an entry level marketing job. Getting to

know the basic tasks. Those tasks include customer service, administrative tasks, reporting to

account executives, media planners, and or client service managers (setup.us). Once you can

perform those basic tasks, the opportunities for a market manager will open up. It can be hard or

boring at first at an entry level job, but it builds the foundation of a marketing manager.

General Education Experience

To be a marketing manager, you need to have at least a bachelor's degree. Master’s

degree is often preferred or required. Your degree should either be in marketing, business

advertising, communications, or other related fields. Many companies will require you to have

experience in marketing, advertising, brand management, or sales (study). You should have 0-2

years of entry level experience before moving up. After that you get into marketing management.

From there you decide if you want to move up and become the director of marketing, VP of

marketing, Chief of marketing, or Senior marketer. You need to have a number of years of

experience between each role before applying for a higher position. According to Fremont.edu,

“You should also consider participating in a management-training program or continuing

education program at a business college to further improve your skills and highlight your

commitment to your career development”. While you’re still in college, consider taking an

internship or shadowing a marketing manager to get more experience before finding an entry

level position.

Average Salary
Marketing Manager 5

The salary for a marketing manager depends on many factors like: how much education

they have, the experience they have, what certifications they have, what skills they have, etc. The

average salary for a marketing manager in the United States is $106,358 as of November 25,

2020 (Salary). The range is between $92,683 and $125,218. The more experience you have in

the marketing field, and the higher your degree is (Masters), the higher your salary will be. This

is very unlikely, but there is a chance that some companies will hire you even if you don’t have

the degree that they’re asking for, but you have the experience that they need.

Career Outlook

From 2019 to 2029, it is expected that the demand for marketing managers will increase

by 7% (which is faster than the average for all occupations). As stated in BLS.gov, marketing

managers will continue to be in demand as organizations use marketing campaigns to maintain

and expand their market share. The authors of “What do Marketing managers do” from Owlguru

asked some marketing managers questions about their job and whether or not they are satisfied

with their job. “We asked marketing managers how satisfied they are with their job, and here is

what they said: 70% of them said they are satisfied with their job and 44% of them said they find

that their job makes the world a better place or helps to make someone else's life feel better”. As

you can see, many people don’t regret being a marketing manager, they enjoy it.

Bio of Someone in the Profession

For this part, I decided to talk about Seth Godin. He is an American author and former

dot com business executive. He has published 19 best selling books. His latest book is called,

“THIS IS MARKETING”. He says it’s a bestseller. He has an MBA in marketing from the

Stanford Graduate School of Business. Thinkers50 mentions that Godin is one of just three
Marketing Manager 6

professionals inducted into the Direct Marketing Hall of Fame and in May 2018 he was inducted

into the Marketing Hall of Fame too. From 1983-1986, he was a brand manager at Spinnaker

Software. “He introduced the concept of “permission marketing” in the early days of the internet

– recognizing and respecting the power of the consumers” (Thinkers50). On Seth’s.blog, he

mentions that he has online courses and a marketing seminar that over 60,000 people have taken.

Pros

If you’re someone who likes to lead others, then being a manager is the right choice for,

but with that comes a price. Being a marketing manager means that not only do you have to lead

your people, but also sell your product at the same time. You meet with new people, get insights

on what your clients think about the product and how to improve it depending on the feedback

you receive. If you like to get creative or if you’re just a creative person in general, this is the job

for you. Marketing managers have to come up with great ideas for their advertising campaigns to

attract customers and sell their products. Marketing managers also travel to wherever it is that

they’re needed and if you’re doing a great job you can either get a raise or be promoted to a

higher position.

Cons

The bad thing about being a manager is that if something goes wrong, it all falls on you.

You’re in charge of your employees and making sure that they’re doing their work and making

sure that they’re meeting their deadlines. There may be some employees who don’t like you and

will not work or do what you asked them to do. Sometimes you have to work overtime instead

of leaving after 8 hours of work when you have big projects coming up. Marketing managers

deal with lots of stress when their deadlines are approaching and their projects aren’t even close
Marketing Manager 7

to being finished. One big thing of being a marketing manager is that the demand is high. You

will be “competing” with other people to get that position.

My “fit” with this career

To me, marketing sounds like an interesting career to have. After doing some research

about what a marketing manager does, I realized that I don’t want to be a marketing manager. I

prefer to be part of the team and help when it is needed. I’m not a very creative person so I don’t

think I will be a good marketing manager because they have to think outside the box to attract

customers and sell their products. I wouldn’t want to be a manager in general because you’ll

have too much stress on yourself and you’re under pressure all the time to make sure everything

goes right or how it was planned.
