For this reflection, I am supposed to write about my experience on writing my signature
assignment. For the signature assignment, I wrote about absence seizures. I wrote about that because of my little sister. To give a little bit of a background story, my little sister was diagnosed with absence seizures when she was 4 years old. One day, my sisters and I were playing outside and my little sister kept falling. Everytime she would stand up, she would fall. My sister and I were laughing because we thought it was funny, but it got to a point where it didn’t feel right. We called my parents and they came outside and immediately took me and my sister to my aunt’s house and they went to the hospital. That’s the day that my little sister was diagnosed and was put on medication. I never thought about doing research on this topic because I wasn’t interested in it. As I got older and I started to understand more I wanted to learn more about this topic. When the teacher said that we had to write a research paper based on anything that had to do with biology, I immediately thought of my little sister. I always thought that when someone had a seizure, it meant that they’re on the floor uncontrollably shaking with loss of consciousness. When I started doing research for my signature assignment, I learned that there are different forms of seizures that can vary from mild to extreme. My sister has the mild form of seizures called absence seizure which is when you lose awareness and have staring episodes that can last for a few seconds up to a couple of minutes. To wrap this up, I decided to do my signature assignment on absence seizures because of my little sister. I learned so much from this assignment and I am glad that I chose to research this topic. It was very interesting to read about the different types of seizures, the different symptoms that occur, and what treatments are used to help either get rid of the seizures or help control them. It’s sad to know that doctors can’t give you a real answer if I can say as to what exactly causes the seizures, we know that it’s a neurological wiring in the brain, but it’s not known exactly why.
