Course Reflection

For this course reflection I’m gonna be honest. I didn’t learn anything in

this class because of the teacher’s negligence. My classmates and I reported him

numerous times hoping that he would change, but nothing happened. I’m doing all of

my assignments as best as I can to receive a good grade. On some of them I don’t

know what I’m doing so I’m just “winging” it. For this reflection I’m supposed to write

about what I’ve learned, how my perspective has changed, and how this relates to my

life. I’m going to talk about what I already know and add some things from a movie and

a series that I watched for this class.

Native Americans were treated differently and cruelly. They were the first people

here in America. Christopher Columbus didn’t discover America, Native Americans did.

This was their home, where they built their communities, had family, held all of their

ceremonies and traditions, etc. Native Americans weren’t seen as human beings, they

were called savages or barbarians. They never did anything wrong, all they wanted was

peace, no conflicts. When the English/Spaniards started to colonize the US, they were

forced to allocate themselves somewhere else. Many of them died trying to fight for their

home, for their rights, their history, etc. They weren’t treated fairly or with the respect

that they deserved. When I watched Reel Injun, it was sad to see how all of the different

native tribes that exist were considered as one; all the same. That’s not the case. Each

tribe has their own unique attributes. They may do some things that are similar to each

other, but it’s different. They all don’t look the same or dress the same. In movies,

they’re seen riding horses, having their face painted, wearing full clothing, feathers on

their

heads. Not all Native Americans ride horses, have their face painted, wear clothes or

feathers on their head. I also watched a documentary series called 500 nations. It was

really sad and disturbing how Native Americans were killed and how their bodies were

disposed of. Of course the Europeans had advanced and stronger weapons and that

was a big disadvantage to the natives, but they shouldn’t have been killed to start with. I

respect all cultures, ethnicities, race, etc. I don’t discriminate against anyone. Watching

these videos made me realize that no one should be treated unfairly or with disrespect.
