COUNCIL
COUNCI
DEFINITION:

The United Nations Security Council

(UNSC) is one of the six principal organs
of the United Nations, charged with
ensuring international peace and security,
recommending the admission of new UN
members to the General Assembly, and
approving any changes to the UN
Charter.

1
FEATURES:

The primary role of United Nations

Security Council is to ensure the
maintenance of peace and security across
the globe. It takes the lead in determining
the existence of a threat to the peace or
act of aggression.

2
RESPONSIBILITIES:

They are spearheading in determining an act of

threat for international peace. They also take the
lead of non-violent dispute settlements and have
the power to give sanction for peace and order
means. They also have the power to conduct
military action against the aggressor. The
appointment Judges of International Court of
Justice could also be conducted through an
assembly.

3
CRITICISM:

Some of the criticisms of United Nations Security

Council may be classified in three. The first one is the
unequal treatment in membership when it comes to the
developing countries. The second one may is the
abuse of power engraved in the five permanent
members. The last one may be the lack of
transparency and efficiency in decision making.

4
CHALLENGES:

The challenges that the organization has been facing

over the years is the issue of veto power within the
five permanent members. The organization decided
to cancel the veto vested as the privilege of five
permanent members but they refused to the decision.
Until now it is still; difficult to achieve this goal. The
reform of UNSC has been also a challenge and a
conflict as its scope is not only the organization but
also the distribution of power in the world.
