QUESTIONS
1. How did you classify the
weathering agents as
mechanical or chemical?
What is your basis?
2. What is weathering?
3. How can you be an agent
of weathering? Give atleast
WEATHERING
Itis the process of
breaking down of rocks
into smaller particles
WEATHERING AGENTS
The factors that
brought changes or
the breaking down of
rocks
2 TYPES OF WEATHERING
1. MECHANICAL WEATHERING- it is
the process of breaking down of
rocks into pieces without
changing its chemical
composition
- also known as physical
weathering
2 TYPES OF WEATHERING
2. CHEMICAL WEATHERING-
-the change in rocks
wherein the composition of
the substance is altered or
change.
FACTORS THAT CAUSES MECHANICAL
WEATHERING
1. Sudden change in temperature
- During daytime, rocks absorb
too much heat from the sun
causing it to expand. But at
night, temperature changes,
it cools down causing the
rocks to contract.
FACTORS THAT CAUSES MECHANICAL
WEATHERING
2. FREEZING WATER- as
water enters the crack in
a rock then freezes, it
expand by about 10% of
its volume that would
cause the rock to split.
FACTORS THAT CAUSES MECHANICAL
WEATHERING

3. Roots of plants and

trees- as the seeds
grow, its roots creep
in and as they grow,
they also exert force
that would split rocks
FACTORS THAT CAUSES MECHANICAL
WEATHERING
4. Burrowing of animals-
animals dig into the rocks then
expose the surface to further
weathering
FACTORS THAT CAUSES MECHANICAL
WEATHERING

5. WIND- It carries the

fine particles of rocks
FACTORS THAT CAUSES MECHANICAL
WEATHERING
6. Rocks- bigger rocks can wear
away other rocks as the rocks
on the hillside roll down and
rub against other rock surfaces
- Dropping of a rock from a
higher place would break the
rock it hits.
FACTORS THAT CAUSES MECHANICAL
WEATHERING

7. Force of water-
waves can cause the
breakage of rocks.
FACTORS THAT CAUSES MECHANICAL
WEATHERING
8. Man’s activities-
constant digging, burning
and camping, mountain
climbing. Stepping on the
rocks can also lead to the
breaking down of rocks.
CHEMICAL WEATHERING

1. CARBONATION- a process wherein

carbon dioxide acts on rocks.
-carbon dioxide in air dissolves water
forming them weak acid known as
carbonic acid.
- minerals present in rocks are easily
can be easily removed because of
carbonic acid resulting for further
weathering.
CHEMICAL WEATHERING
2. OXIDATION- it is a chemical
process where oxygen combines
with other substances to form
oxides.
- oxygen is most effective as an
agent of chemical weathering when
dissolved in water. Rust forms
crumbles and rocks are broken
CHEMICAL WEATHERING
3. HYDRATION- It is the chemical union
of water with other elements.
- water easily combines with rock
minerals, forming a new substance.
- minerals swell and form many cracks in
the rocks.

EX. Limonite- it is a combination of iron

oxide and water.
CHEMICAL WEATHERING
4. SOLUTION- Substances
dissolved in water .
LEACHING- the continuous removal
of mineral from soil by solution.
Ex. Caves are formed from solution
of underground layers of
limestones
CHEMICAL WEATHERING
5. ACIDS SECRETED BY
ROOTS OF PLANTS- as
plants decay, they give
off acids as that help in
the decomposition of
rocks.

NOW RESULTED IN THE
FORMATION OF SOIL.
