• The ABC Murder story (from The Web of Belief , Quine and
Ullian, 1978 )
• Cabot pleads alibi too, claiming to have been watching a ski meet
in the Catskills, but we have only his words for that.
Belief
• So we believe
• But presently Cabot documents his alibi- he had the good luck to
have been caught by television in the sidelines at the ski meet. A
new belief is thus thrust upon us:
• The basis for (1) in the hotel register is good, since it is a fine old
hotel.
• Thus either incriminate Babbit or widen our net for some new
suspect.
• Monotonic Reasoning
• Statistical Reasoning
Monotonic Reasoning
• New facts are added if they are consistent with all other facts and
new theorems are proved, but the old facts never become
invalid/disappear. This property is called monotonicity.
• But monotonic systems are not suitable in the real world problem
domains where information is incomplete, inconsistent and
situations change and new assumptions are generated while
solving new problems.
NonMonotonic Reasoning(NMR)
• NMR system are reasoning systems which are able to solve the
problem in which knowledge is uncertain or data is incomplete.
For ex : We would like to be able to say things like “If you have no
reason to suspect that a particular person committed a crime, then
assume he didn’t” or “If you have no reason to believe that someone
is not getting along with her relatives, then assume that the relatives
will try to protect her ”.
(i) A mechanism for defining the set of models of any set of wffs.
(ii) Provides a way to believe in some model rather than others.
(iii) Provides the basis for a practical implementation of this kind
of reasoning.
(iv) Corresponds to our intuitions.
