Explain how the existence of

homologous and vestigial structures can

be explained by Darwin’s Theory of
Natural Selection…

Homologous structure

Homologous structures are organs or skeletal

elements of animals and organisms that, by virtue
of their similarity, suggest their connection to a
common ancestor. These structures do not have
the same function. The most important part, as
hinted by their name, is that they are structurally
similar.
Vestigial structures

A vestigial structure is an anatomical feature

or behavior that no longer seems to have a purpose
in the current form of an organism of the given
species. Often, these vestigial structures were
organs that performed some important functions in
the organisms at one point in the past.
However, as the population changed due to
natural selection, those structures became less
and less necessary until they were rendered pretty
much useless. They are believed to be leftovers.

Natural selection can only take

place if there is variation, or
differences, among individuals in a
population and still requires genetic
basis.
