Chapter 15
Types of Impressions
1. Patent- visible, 2D impressions produced as
an object moves through soil, dusy, paint,
blood, or other fine particles and leaves a
trace.
2. Latent- hidden to the eye but can be
visualized through the use of special dusting
and electrostatic techniques or chemical
developers.
3. Plastic- 3D imprints. Can be left in soft
materials, such as snow, mud, soil or soap.
Individual or Class Evidence
Tread pattern in shoes or tires can identify the brand or size, but not specific
individual.
Dental impressions are considered individual evidence. (These have a long history
of being helpful. How and Why?)
Shoe Impressions

The track width and the wheelbase narrow down the search
1. Track width- Center of one tire to the other. Front and rear may differ.
2. Wheelbase- Center of front axle to center of rear axle. Taken to nearest
mm.
Turning Diameter/Radius
Vegetation disturbed
Tire marks
Accident Reconstruction
The goal is to find out what happened, when it happened, where it happened, why
it happened, how fast the vehicle was going, who was involved and who was at
fault.
1. Skid marks: when brakes are hit suddenly, provides distance brakes were
applied
2. Yaw Marks: when a vehicle travels in a curved path, tires and roads melt from
extreme temperature, audible squeal and smoke occur.
3. Tire scrubs: Produced by a damage or overloaded tire, curved or irregular, may
have striations that look like stripes. Determine area of impact.
