People usually find out about employment opportunities advertised in the media sector by
the following:
• Networking -networking can be used in two ways, online or in person. If a person wants to look for jobs
in person they are usually done by going to events and careers fairs. These events take place for when
employers want to recruit new people to work for them as it is usually an open invite for people to attend
to. Social media networking allows a person to find out about jobs online from online career sites such as
‘Linkden’.
• Personal contacts-people find out about job opportunities through the people they know, in whom
introduce them to the job opportunity. This is very effective as they are most likely to be accepted into the
job as the person who introduced them to it is already known in the industry.
• National press- The national press advertises jobs opportunities through social media platforms like ‘The
guardian’ or ‘the daily news'. These news companies promote the job companies through their social sites
and help the job company gain more acknowledgment. They either do this on news papers or on the news
website.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF CONTRACTS IN MEDIA
EMPLOYMENT
There are a range of different contracts in media employments.
• Part time- This contract establishes terms and conditions between an employer and an
employee. This contract covers the amount of hours the employee works and the salary they
will earn. The employee does not work full time as there are hours in this contract that they
will work which is much less than full time.
• Full time-a full time contract requires the employee to work full time with more hours than
part time. Full time usually consist of 5-8 hours shift per day, which in total adds up to 35-40
hours a week. Full time work employees usually gain much more money than part time and
temporary employees.
• Temporary: this contract is a flexible work placement, in which requires the employee to work
over a fixed period of time, such as maternity cover. The employer is allowed 28 days holiday
from the contract.

• Permanent- a permanent work contract is when an employer needs a member of staff to work with
hem permanently, which includes fixed term contracts. This allows the employee to have benefits
from being an employee, as they are working with them permanently
• Voluntary-this type of job has a contract that is done by choice, which doesn’t give the employee a
personal gain or payment.
• Freelance/self employed-a freelance job is for someone who is not fully committed to one employer,
as it this type of work is used for someone who is self employed. This is when a person works for
themselves and has no loyalty to just one employer. People such as business owners have this type of
contract.

• A portfolio is a complication of work done by the employee. A portfolio is very important as it
is a collection of a persons work, highlights a persons achievements and goals in which will
impress the employer when applying for a job.
• Show reel-this is a short video tape that shows an employees previous work. This is similar to a
portfolio, a show real is important to show to employers as they can see possible employees
attributes and they can see why they should be hiring them.
• Website- a website is a place where a person can upload work or a portfolio in order to keep
them all together under one domain name. A cv can also be uploaded to a website, making it
easier for an employer to access it through a website
• Social media-this is becoming increasingly popular among employers, as using social media is a
good way to find a job. Social media sites can also be used, as friends can post or share jobsites
and opportunities.
WHAT YOU NEED FOR FINDING
EMPLOYMENT
• CV-a cv is one of the most important things needed when looking for a job, as
it is a first chance to make a good impression with the employer. Having a
good cv will boost a persons chances of landing an interview with an
employer. A cv will provide the employer with the candidates previous work
experience, education and experience.
• Letters of application-an application letter is a short letter that is sent to an
employer along with a cv,about the job application. A letter application
provides further detail about the candidate.
• References- a reference is a letter from a previous employer detailing a
persons capability and how they worked as an employee. This validates what
the candidate has said on their cv.
INTERVIEW PREPARATIONS

• Self presentation- in an interview, a person must present themselves in a


respectable way, to further the chance of getting the job. This includes: a
formal dress code, good good communication skills, polite interaction and
appropriate behaviour for the job.
• interview techniques- preparation is important before an interview a person
should inform themselves about the company and prepare questions for the
interview. During an interview they should act proffesionally,have effective
body language and be confident as if these actions is displayed they have a
better chance of impressing the implorer.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING-
• To increase job opportunities, a person must update their technical and professional skills. This
includes gaining an appropriate degree for a job, train on the job and going to training courses.
• Work experience/shadowing- work experience is very necessary for increasing the chances of
getting a job placement. To have an advantage to getting a job a person should find a work
experience placement from either their school or personal relations, as it is a good way to grasp
the idea and feeling of what work is like.
• Updating employment records-
• Regularly updating employment records will increase the chances of landing a job. A person
should often update their cv with any new accomplishments, update their show reel, website or
portfolio and remove any out dated information.
