The British Monarch

& The Story of Princess Diana

The British Monarch

A monarchy is a form of government where a

king or a queen is Head of State. The British
monarchy is a constitutional monarchy. This
means that the sovereign’s powers are quite
limited and they are defined by the elected
Parliament and the country’s constitution. Yet
the ruling monarch does have a number of
unique powers and privileges.
• The monarch is completely above the law, cannot commit a legal offence and therefore cannot be subject to legal
prosecution.
· The monarch can drive as fast as they want without getting a speeding ticket.
· He is able to appoint and dismiss the prime minister and other ministers.
· He can drive without a license and does not need a passport to travel abroad.
· Also The British sovereign is not legally obliged to pay taxes. But they do pay taxes voluntarily, though, to set a
good example.
· One odd privilege is that the monarch owns all the unclaimed swans on the River Thames as well as all the dolphins,
whales and sturgeons in British waters

royal?

a title when they marry.

Princess Di” rapidly evolved into an
icon of grace, elegance, and glamour.

Death and funeral

Long one of the most-photographed women in the world, Diana’s unprecedented popularity both in Britain and abroad
continued after her divorce. Although she used that celebrity to great effect in promoting her charitable work, the media (in
particular the paparazzi) were often intrusive. It was while attempting to evade pursuing journalists that Diana was killed, along
with her companion, Dodi Fayed, and their driver, Henri Paul, in an automobile accident in a tunnel under the streets of Paris in
1997.
