An engineering drawing is a formal way to communicate precise information about physical objects. It allows ideas and requirements to be shared between people universally with consistency. Engineering drawings are needed because photographs cannot show inner details, while drawings provide consolidated accessible information at any time. Standards help ensure engineering drawings can be understood globally with a common grammar or language.

What is an Engineering Drawing
- An Engineering Drawing is an array of lines, symbols, text and figures
representing an idea which acts as a medium of communication between different people.
- An Engineering Drawing is a formal precise way of communicating
information about an physical object regarding its shape, size, material, colour, texture, features, precision & other requirements. design db bureau READING ENGINEERING DRAWINGS Why Engineering Drawings are needed - Engineering Drawing is needed to communicate the requirements from one place to another with universal understanding. It is not practical to engage a person to explain all the requirement round the clock. - A photograph of the object , if already available , can explain the basic outer shape, size, colour etc. to some extent. However inner details can not be explained explicitly. - Making the consolidated information about the object at all times is possible with eng.drawings - As it is an universal language, language barriers are minimised though not eliminated. - There is authenticity and validity for the exchanged information. - Ease of handling / Record / Control of data ,ideas & information. design db bureau READING ENGINEERING DRAWINGS An Engineering Drawing is called as Engineers Language. If it is true, then The “ Grammar “ of this language is the STANDARD. One can make this language more and more sweet by ensuring its meaningfulness, universal adaptability and easy to understand level by one and all.Engineering Drawing is a formal and precise way of communicating information about the shape, size, precision, and features of physical objects.
Reading Engineering Drawing could be a complete course by itself, but we
initially we have planned two half days sessions, hence we will be covering only the basics. However , if there is a need felt by the management and the participants ,then a need based continuation with more details on specific topics could be arranged in future. design db bureau READING ENGINEERING DRAWINGS STANDARDS As the industrial development was taking shape in Europe and North America, different companies and common product groups felt a need of Standardisation in their industries. With the result many Standards were prepared and floated in circulation. Viz. Bosch Standard Ford Standard GM Standard Renault Standard Later on during and after the world war II, more and more national interactions started. With the result, National Standards were prepared. When the trades were increased to international level ,Global Standardisation needs were faced and ISO ( International Standard Organisation) was born. design db bureau READING ENGINEERING DRAWINGS
