 The Particle Nature of Matter

 Scientists find the particle model useful for two reasons. First, it provides a reasonable
explanation for the behavior of matter. Second, it presents a very important idea—the particles of
matter are always moving. Matter that seems perfectly motionless is not motionless at all. The
particle model of matter is one of the most useful scientific models because it describes matter in
all three states. Understanding how the particles of matter behave is vital if we hope to
understand science! The model also helps us to understand what happens to the particles when
matter changes from one state to another.
 Matter has thermal energy. Thermal energy includes both the kinetic
energy and the potential energy of the particles. Different states of matter
have different amounts of thermal energy. In any substance the particles in
gaseous state has greater thermal energy than in solid state because
particles in gaseous state move faster than in solid state. The difference
between the liquid and the solid depends on the movement of the particles
and the thermal energy they contain
