CHRONIC

BACK PAIN MANAGEMENT:
INTEGRATIVE APPROACH TO THE
COMPLICATED CASES: A CASE REPORT AND
REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE.
Elvan Yuzereroglu, M.D.
BACKGROUND:

• Chronic back pain (CBP) is common symptoms

bothering people in daily life. Traditional
Chinese medicine (TCM) has been used to treat
various symptoms and has been demonstrated to
be effective.. This report describes the use
of acupuncture as an add on treatment for a
patient with chronic back pain combined with
hypertension and posttraumatic stress syndrome
(PTSS)
OBJECTIVES:

• Integrative approach to complicated case can

be effective to decrease the medication dosage
METHODS:

• We present a descriptive case study of the

development and implementation of a practice
protocol for TCM methods for lower back pain
with hypertension and PTSS
• Patient is 47 year-old male who reported lower
back pain radiating to both leg with diagnosed
hypertension and PTSS.
METHODS:

• We designed treatment protocol for 4 visits and follow up drug dosage and blood pressure
after 4 visit and compared the results. Study was conducted at Florida College of
Integrative Medicine.
RESULTS:

• The positive outcomes included increased ranges of

motion, decreased pain, as well as improvements in
sleep, and decreased to dosage of narcotic pain
medication for short term
CONCLUSIONS:

• Acupuncture, microsystem acupuncture, tuina and cupping could be efficacious in

treating the CBP complicated with hypertension and PTSS but we were unable to draw
any definite conclusions, and further research is still needed. Although these TCM
modalities are relatively safe.
