WHY PICO IS
IMPORTANT
The most common causes of CHF are hypertension and
coronary artery disease. Common physical symptoms of
CHF are tachycardia, shortness of breath, decreased
consciousness, increased arterial blood oxygenation,
discomfort, and irregular sleep patterns. CHF sufferers also
feel unsure, anxious and depressed. Negative emotions
(e.g. anxiety and depression) appear to be more common
in CHF patients than in healthy individuals. Research
conducted by Jiang et al. who interviewed 291 CHF
patients found that the younger the patient, the greater
the anxiety. One of the efforts made to reduce anxiety
symptoms is by providing non-pharmacological therapy,
one of which is Back Massage therapy.
CONCLUSION
In the journal "The Effect of Back Massage Intervention
on Anxiety, Comfort, and Physiological Responses of Patients
with Congestive Heart Failure by Wei-Ling Chen, RN, MSN1,

Kai Hsieh, MD6 Back massage can help CHF patients feel less
anxious and more comfortable. After back massage for 3
consecutive days, participants' systolic and diastolic blood
pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate were much lower
than before, while their oxygen saturation levels increased
significantly. After 1 day of massage, the level of anxiety and
discomfort, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure,
heart rate, and respiratory rate increased significantly.
Oxygen saturation levels increased significantly after 2 days
of back massage.
