• Introduction
 Machining is a broad term to describe removal of material from a
workpiece.
 Machining process is classified as:
1.Traditional machining process
2.Non-traditional machining process
 IJM (Ice jet machining) is non-traditional machining process.
 Ice jet machining is derivative of Abrasive water Jet Machining
process in which ice particles are used in place of abrasive particles.
 In this process of wide variety of materials are cut by using a very
high-pressure jet of water, or a mixture of water and ice particles.

• Working
 The Water from reservoir is pumped at a high pressure by using a
high pressure pump.
 This high pressure water is then supplied to the cooling coils.
 Then it passes through cooling coils to cutting head.
 Cutting head is connected with ice formation unit through which ice
formed is supplied in the jet of water.
 The ice is mixed with high pressure water within the nozzle.
 This high-velocity ice jet when strikes the surface of the workpiece it
removes the material from it.
 The ice jet after machining is collected by the drain and catcher
system.

Generation of ice:
There are two methods-
1. Generating the ice in
a generator before
mixing it to the water
jet.
2. Forming ice particles
during water jet
formation by
introducing a cooling
gas like liquid
nitrogen
